I have several Atlas ACF 50' boxcars - I've noticed that the underframes seen to be generically done, and the brake components are done in such a way that it clearly shows who was doing the CAD work was completely clueless on this. I think they spend more time researching how to add "ATLAS CHINA" then they did with getting the center sill, cross members, brake components correct.
Seriously, the control valve is a "box" nearly 28 inches x 12 inches and the reservoir tank has a mounting bracket attached to thin air. Crazy! Even more crazy is that the bottom of the reservoir is only about 9 inches above the rail head.
Does anyone have photos of these ACF 50' cars that show the underframes? Making a replacement in styrene is not too difficult and would actually increase the value of the model. A 3D printed part would be a great time saver.

Moloco has an under frame that can be modified to fit the Atlas Boxcars...you could email him about these parts...Nick...Are you out there?

I would prefer to find photos of actual ACF cars if possible or drawings from a Car Builder's book. I have to believe that photos exist somewhere of these under frames.

The fine folks on the Modern Freight Cars List on Yahoo Groups might have some info.

Tony, just to clarify, are you referring to the early smoothside Precision Design cars, the later exterior post PD cars, or the Trainman ACF Plate C 5290 cuft cars? I think the first two have the same or very similar underframes. The Plate C cars are a bit different.

I'm not sure about the quality of the bodies, but the underframe of the PD cars is pretty basic. It is fairly old tooling, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure if Atlas did this car today the standard would be much higher.
I wouldn't expect to much detail-wise of a Trainman car either.

In fact I picked up a couple MIB old stock of the ACF car so I was looking to find out how old and they go back to at least 2002.

Just to be clear, I was referring to the difference in the prototype underframes, not the models. I think I have photos of the Train ACF 5290 prototype underbody - I’d have to check. The earlier Plate B cars should look a little different. That’s why I was wondering which model Tony was referring to.
The Atlas body shells are pretty accurate, but they made a revision to the early smoothside box car body shell that corrected several errors, particularly with the roof, if I recall correctly. The Trainman Plate C underbody is definitely very simplified. I have one that I was redoing by replacing all the cross braces with styrene I-beams, but the project stalled because I wasn’t sure how I wanted to model the air main line, which runs around outside of the trucks at each end (an unusual design).

The Atlas model at my desk here has on the label, 50' Precision Design Box Car (MP Car) - I think the other model has a label of "Precision Box Car" (CNW cars). Both might have the same basic part. These I would like to replace, but would like to know how they should be constructed.
