A couple of weeks ago I was looking through my stash of decals and I found a set of Monon decals from Model Railroad supply. These are excellent decals and a weathered Monon boxcar would look great on my Penn Central railroad. I also had an old Model Railroad article on modeling a 40' PS-1 boxcar and these decals but instead of the Intermountain car in the article I used a Kadee undecorated kit car. Here is the result: I carefuly scrubbed all of the enginneered plastic parts with a toothbrush and a powdered cleanser (Bar Keepers Helper) but did not scrub the body because it was made out of styrene (but shiny). I painted the stripe area ModelFlex White and the rest of the body with a PollyScale mix of 2 parts Red Oxide to 1 part Special Oxide Red. However when I removed the masking it pulled much of the white stripe and the red clean off! This was because the paint did not stick to the shiny plastic. Luckily I did not add the parts yet to the car so I stripped off the paint using oven cleaner (outside) and started over again but this time I scrubbed the body too. I also painted the frame and ends ModelFlex Engine Black and the roof a silver/gray mix. Worked fine the second time: These cars were well weathered by the mid 1970's so I weathered it heavily to match photos that I found. I took my time using pencils, water color pencils, PanPastels and an airbrush. Remember to paint and weather the trucks! So from a forgotten set of decals I ended up with a classic freight car from the 50's still running in its original paint in the 1970's.

The Monon, one of those long merged away lines. Now abandoned in many places.

Great work as always Tom!
You know, Kadee is one of those companies that is long overdue to release something new. Not another paint scheme, but a completely new model. I know they’ll say their main focus is couplers, but I can’t help but feel they could be a much bigger player in the RTR segment of the hobby.
Also, I remember a conversation on this forum in which Sam Clarke of Kadee participated and he said they would offer a 50’ boxcar decorated for PC “if” someone could provide either good clear photos or actual stenciling drawings. As a PC modeler myself, I keep that in the back of my mind while looking through photos and documents at trainshows or while searching on the web. Haven't found anything yet, but maybe someone here can help locate what they need.
Thanks, Mark

Another beautiful model, Tom! Thanks for sharing the tip about scrubbing the Kadee plastic. I’m planning to kitbash a GTW raised-roof PS-1 box car from a Kadee kit and would not have thought of prepping the plastic that way. I’m sure you saved me some frustration down the road.

Thanks, Mark The problem being IIRC, the only 50' PC PS1 Boxcars were the 100 for the Peoria & Eastern and they kept the P&E Reporting Marks with an Elongated PC Herald. Then there were 25 for MDT with NRBX reporting marks, don't know if they were ever repainted. Rick Jesionowski

I did a Monon after hearing Mont Switzer's presentation on Monon boxcars at Lisle last October. I did one of the secondhand cars they got from PS that were returns from NYSW because of the Jim Sands shot in Marshalltown, IA in 1968, close to my modeling era. Tim VanMersbergen

Beautiful work Tom, love the oxidized weathered look you've achieved! Thanks! I was worried when I started and mainly used various shaded of PanPanstels to get that look......and went easy on applying it.
