Would a rebuild of an F unit with a newer EMD engine and something like Dash 2 standards effect the outward appearance?
I read where NS rebuilt their F unit fleet and the fans needed new housings.
I also read on the utahrails website about UP having the F3s rebuilt to F9s and that involved a fan change and more side louvers.
Thanks all.

There is no outward appearance on UP’s E9s. Part of the requirement in rebuilding them was to not change the outward appearance.

A lot of rebuilt F's got extensive modifications to the point that one couldn't tell exactly what they were rebuilt from. Take MBTA's rebuilt GM&O F3's for example... Here's GM&O 885A: And here she is rebuilt as MBTA 1150:

The radiator fans look much the same, but they added a big 48" fan over the rear part of the roof for the HEP package...not to mention the two mufflers that flank that fan. There's also the various antennae and gubbins associated with a modern unit. I have a photo I took in April 2014 but...no space for uploads in this forum.

For instance when Burlington Northern rebuilt the two former Northern Pacific F9 A & B into the executive units they added some honking rear extension. Louvers on the F9A remained standard, the F9B lost the middle porthole. Norfolk Southern's F's have had the nose door removed. The dynamic brakes were removed and the fan location plated over. Modified the EMD B trucks to a single brake shoe per wheel instead of the double clasp. NS added HEP to the A's and receptacles to the nose and rear. The B's originally had the standard two non-turbo exhaust stacks when first entering service on NS. Now both B's appear to have been turbocharged with a single exhaust. A turbocharged F7B sounds sporty. The B's lost their dynamic brakes too. CNW's executive F's generally looked like they did when they traded commuter service for executive service. The CNW executive B's had modifications like the removal of dynamic brakes and one had a hybrid exhaust system.

As part of the CRP, yeah some did end up in RI blue and white, you have to understand that the RI planned on, and rebuilt almost all GP7/9/18's.

Heh. If you're talking about F-unit rebuilds, how about the FL9AC's? Six FL9's were rebuilt into "modern" engines using AC tech: 3 for Metro North and 3 for the Long Island RR. They were not that successful, and all 6 have been scrapped. But boy, were they modified.
