I'm looking for some modern HO scale wheels that look realistic on the back (for a display I'm doing). See here: TruckMany of the trucks I've looked at have flat backs on the wheel. I would like some ridges, etc. Not early trucks with the ribs. I went and looked at Kadee and they have some drawings but not photos. Proto87 has flat backs on the wheels. Any ideas? Thanks.

Code 88 wheels will,of course, look better in a display.
Tichy makes scale (I think) wheelsets for scenery purposes: #3004 gets you 8 wheelsets for $2, #3010 gets 96 for $9.50. Such a deal, I am telling you!

You'll need something without the toy-train-like needlepoint axle. Tichy makes some plastic wheels and axles but if I remember right the wheels are of the ancient ribbed-back variety.

If you are going for bare axles and wheelsets, then you may want to look at Protoloads and see if you can still get a hold of their bearing caps. I don't see them listed on their website, but they used to supply bearing caps that would slide over the needle tips on model wheelsets to give them a prototypical look. An email to them would get you an answer on if they still carry those.

Also, Tichy makes separate roller bearing parts (part #3080) that you can slip over the ends of your model RR axles to simulate how a real wheelset (with bearings) looks when removed from a freight car.

Now that I think about it, I want to say that Protoloads was having Tichy cast their roller bearings. So if Protoloads doesn't have them Tichy will.

I don't know what the backs of the wheels look like, but Proto 87 wheels from someone like NWSL are going to look more realistic than .110 or .088 tread wheels. You can get them with shouldered axles, or use bearing caps as several have suggested.

Speaking of the Tichy wheelsets, any ideas on how to change them to non-ribbed backs? I'm wondering if there's something I can fill the ridges with that won't take much time per wheel. I don't think anybody makes code 88 plastic wheelsets and metal ones cost too much to use as a load.
