I’m looking into going with a simple signal system when I start my layout, an I was told to look into ABS. I was wondering what all would need to be purchased for a proper working ABS system?

You'll need block detection and a way to drive signals. What sort of setup do you have now?
ESU and Digitrax both make hardware for this type of setup.

If you want to keep it really simple but still have some animation, look into Logic Rail's Block Animator. It works by protecting a block as long as a train is in it -- detected with your choice of photocell or infrared. When the train leaves the block the signals will change to yellow and then after 10 or 30 seconds (selectable) to green. It's a good "80-20" solution -- giving like 80% of the effect with 20% of the effort. See www.logicrailtech.com/

Yes, the Logic Rail product works with any DCC system -- or DC system -- as it's completely separate and stand-alone from the control system. It does the detection via visible or infrared light. There are also circuit diagrams for cases such as connecting it to a turnout position using extra contacts on the same switch used to switch polarity of the frog.
