I finished changing out the roller bearings on the trucks of the Burlington Northern E9Au. BLI builds the model with the old style of square and sloped Hyatt roller bearing boxes. Since E8's and E9's came with the newer round more streamlined style of Hyatt's. Hyatt Roller Bearings was a General Motors subsidiary. This is a truck as it comes from BLI With new bearing caps. They are discontinued Detail Associates parts.

I had a slew of new parts to add to my Shapeways store, unfortunately it will be unfeasible with Shapeways new pricing structure, with prices jumping up over 200% in some cases, before any sort of markup is added. Its a real shame, and they dont seem to be willing to work with the store owners on it.

Finished up a few cars and thought I would finally shoot them. First up is a Moloco SOO GATC RBL. Added ICG Decals ACI labels. Tangent wheels. Weathering with oils and colored pencil. I model 1973 so 8 years of weathering here. Thanks for looking. David Lehlbach

We're in the same boat vis a vis Shapeways. I just uploaded an S scale version of an HO scale part I made and I was shocked to see the price. I've been focused lately on adding lights and decoders to my diesel fleet. I've maintained a few to run at Free-mo setups but the majority of my locomotives were built without a layout in mind at all, and were essentially just shelf/display models. So it's an expensive but not very fun to photograph or show off part of modeling. But I did dig out a Norscott Trail King lowboy model. These are dimensionally accurate models, but as diecast collectibles they're not very model ready if that makes any sense. I bought two when they first came out and immediately did one with laser cut decking and a new paint job. I left the other one in my parts bin for someday. This was the first trailer: Last week someday finally arrived. I had already sacrificed all my old Athearn 45' Fruehauf Z vans keeping only their spoke wheels, so I had a ready supply of wheels to add to this trailer. I had cut out the middle section of the trailer so I installed styrene strip for the lateral beams. The sections outside the twin longtiudinal beams that make up the trailer will be covered with laser cut wood once it gets here. I'll probably throw a couple boards over the middle section, too. I wish the outriggers weren't molded onto the outside face of the deck rails. I'd love to model a wide load with the outriggers extended. I believe Plano makes those outriggers so it would be a pretty simple detail to add. Maybe I'll just have to print new deck rails without the outriggers for the next trailer. I like the K100 with this trailer, but I have a couple Athearn W900 bodies that will get new chassis, suspension, tanks, fifth wheels, tires, etc. so I don't think this is the final configuration of this rig.

Did Shapeways increase their quality in relation to the price increase? New equipment; better finish, etc.,?

Shapeways also "improved" the user experience so designers have to back out of the upload page and find the newly uploaded model on another page to begin the process of offering the part for sale. And that option is cleverly hidden behind a button whose icon is simply three dots. I thought I hated the last upgrade, but this one is nearly impossible to use.

The new user interface to me seems like it was designed on a cell phone operating platform. Very hard to use and work around indeed.

Great looking KW Ryan! The last month has been a very busy one, with two four day trips out of town with my band and way too much "day job" as well. What time I have had for the hobby has me prepping some models for an upcoming local swap meet. Case in point would be these two (of 3) obsolete, older issue Athearn SD40T-2s, I've added a few parts and weathered them up, so they'll sell pretty easily. The $$$ generated will go towards a like number of Scale Trains units.

Those tunnel motors look fantastic! I'm excited for the Scale Trains models too, but I'm sure a lot of people would be thrilled with that pair.
The Kenworth K100 is a Tyco cab and grille mated to an Athearn chassis with a Boley interior. I think the fuel tanks are Dennis Aust parts. I always loved those Tyco Kenworths as a kid. I need to do another one of these upgrades someday.

The new user interface to me seems like it was designed on a cell phone operating platform. Very hard to use and work around indeed. If it was designed to work on a phone, it doesn't, at least not on Chrome/Android. It may work on iphone, but I wouldn't know. The previous version didn't work on mobile either. Though some pages would work, several were never ported over to a mobile compatible format. So you'd end up on a page with tiny text and icons that was difficult to navigate. Now I don't have a problem with Shapeways designing their shopping experience for mobile, but who is designing anything more than a pendant or bracelet charm on a phone? I design and upload everything on a workstation dedicated to that function. Apparently so does everyone else who chimed in on their forum about this redesign. The reaction to it has been like the gaming world's reaction to Blizzard's Diablo Mobile announcement. Those guys didn't see the universal negative response coming either.

The $$$ generated will go towards a like number of Scale Trains units. Those tunnel motors will be a nice buy for someone needing mid 1980's tunnel motors with a nice light weathering. Those both came originally with the PTC cabinets ~1985+. But looks like you removed the PTC cabinet from 5357. The funky thing about #5357 is the original nose light puts it at about 1978 and earlier, but the PTC cabinet installed places it at 1985/86. Athearn is finally coming out with the post wreck version of 5357 along 3 of the 4th order tunnel motors in a few months with the box mounted nose light; the version I have been waiting for for years. But the ST guys tell me they will be doing the low nose box light version in the future so kinda doubtful I will get any more Athearn tunnel motors. When I back dated to caboose era D&RGW, I sold all my 1st run PTC tunnel motors. Like you Mark, I have the ScaleTrains tunnel motors on order and will be selling some engines to help with the cost.

Been working on this Wheels of Time bulkhead:
For the ends I took one of the supplied ends to a local arts and crafts store, and found some wood that matched the height of the end boards. However it was square sticks and ended up being too thick. I stuck the boards to some tape and sanded them down to get them to be much closer to the thickness of the original board. The sanding didn't leave them flush, which was neat cause some boards wound up sticking up more than others. I ran a razor saw across the boards and across the deck. Then I stained them with a a mix of india ink and alcohol. I also used this mix on the sides after applying the ACI labels, lube plates, and wheel dots (all highball products decals). I attached the board with white glue, then used a punch to start to break the boards while attached to the car. I took the boards back off and completed the breaks by snapping the boards where the breaks from punch were. Then reattached them with white glue.
I still need to weather the trucks and "metal" parts. I'm liking how the ends came out, but not completely satisfied with the deck or at least the parts where I painted over some areas where the factory paint chipped off. I'm thinking I'll do powders or colored pencils for the "metal" bits, but I haven't find a good photo from the 78-82 era of one of these. I patterned my breaks in the end board by looking at some mid-80s photos and breaking less boards.

I love the treatment of the ends on that bulkhead flat! Great job.

I didn't get any real modelling done this week, but I have been getting back into photography recently. My target as of late has been my scale trains ES44. It's amazing how much a quality lens improves picture quality.

I finally finished preliminary decaling on my batch of FMC 5077 double doors... That including renumbering all the McCloud River boxcars, and the WP "feather" car. I need to fade a couple cars before applying another layer of decals, and am waiting on custom decals for some others.

I borrowed a lens from a co-worker to see if I would like shooting my models with a prime. I was using a sigma 100mm F2.0. I ended up finding a good deal on a 24-70mm so I picked that up, and don't have any complaints. This image was sharpened, otherwise it's straight from camera. Color is off a little, but that can easily be fixed.
