Wow, nice work Matt! I worked on some Walthers Southern Pacific and Florida East Coast flatcars this week. All I did was replace the forward hitches with Details West 1008 on a thin shim to get the hitch to the correct height, then fill in the holes in the deck and paint to match. I need to work on some reefer trailers for these now. I also dug up this old project. So here we are in 2012 back when I thought this one was languishing on the workbench: Six years later and I still haven't finished it. I need to add grabs, trainline air hoses, a plow, fix that glue blob on the roof, finish/touch up the paint and add some decals. Maybe another year? I did add a decoder and lighting, so at least it runs. Here it is with an Athearn RTR model for comparison:

Matt, very nice MILW photo. Is that brass little Joe?
Ryan, did replacing the hitch allow you to place two 45' trailers on those Walthers flat cars? Mine are still in boxes from moving but I've read you can't place two 45' trailers without modifications to the stock flat cars. I have a bunch of 45' trailers since my modeling era includes the first couple years of 45' trailer service.

Something old from me as progress on the trio F60GH flats and associated military vehicles is slow...… An LLP2K 4427 loaded with Petroleum Coke.

Nice work on the hitches and decks. What thickness did you use under the Details West hitches? .10? Also, what paint did you use to match the decks - it looks bang on.

Guys, I finally finished the Q-Connection BN whalebelly hopper that has been on my working bench for years. It's a resin kit and cost quite some effort to get a reasonable result. Trucks are Athearn with roller bearing caps. Couplers are Kadee #158. I like it, but I think this would make a great project for Tangent Scale Models. Cornelius.

The SP cars are marked as "TWO 45'S" but I'm not sure about the FEC cars during my era. Based on this photo I decided to make the same modifications on the FEC cars as the SP cars: www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=33224Those Details West hitches aren't exactly right for this application since they are fixed instead of collapsible, but they're close enough. Nice work on the hitches and decks. What thickness did you use under the Details West hitches? .10? Also, what paint did you use to match the decks - it looks bang on. Thanks. 0.020" will get you to the prototype height. The Walthers ACF hitches just came up on another list, so I measured them and the Atlas equivalent. The Walthers ACF hitches are about 4-5 scale inches too tall and the Atlas hitches are 1-2 scale inches too short in height. As for the color, I mixed Model Master burnt umber, Rot Braun and British Crimson until I had something close. The FEC decks aren't as good a match, but I used Flat Gull Gray and white until it was passable. Those will be weathered to the point where the light color is pretty filthy anyway.

Never really had a chance to break out the air brush. Rained too much. I did manage to get some work done on these. I'm finding the liquitex transparent ink is pretty nifty. I used it more so on the purina car.

Wow, that thing builds into a nice model. I'll need to dig mine out and build it one of these days! Jim

I finally finished the Q-Connection BN whalebelly hopper that has been on my working bench for years. That looks great! I have two kits on the shelf that are destined to become a SBD and a CSXT car, and I’ve been putting them off because of their reputation for being difficult to build. Any tips for things to look out for? Thanks! Thanks. 0.020" will get you to the prototype height. The Walthers ACF hitches just came up on another list, so I measured them and the Atlas equivalent. Your FEC flats look great though. I’m not sure when I’ll ever get around to 89’ flats. That seems almost like a whole new hobby to figure out the prototype variations. Dave

That’s a bummer about the hitch height, Ryan. Your FEC flats look great though. I’m not sure when I’ll ever get around to 89’ flats. That seems almost like a whole new hobby to figure out the prototype variations. Dave I learned a lot just looking for photos of the SP flats. I'm a little hazy on how long they lasted with SP, but it appears some went to KCS and FEC later in their lives. All the FEC cars I have were apparently delivered new. There are other groups that are obviously former SP cars and there are hitch variations within those groups. I modeled a type of fixed hitch that I saw on a Santa Fe flat that didn't seem to match any type available from DW. As I was looking through photos of FEC flats I saw some former SP cars with the same type of hitch. I don't know when those hitches were installed or which railroad installed them. You might have an easier time tracking those changes around your modeling era since photos are much more abundant. I'm afraid I have to settle for speculation when it comes to modeling some things in the late 80s. The data on railcarphotos.com that accompanies many of the photos has been very helpful to me and has greatly limited the things I have to guess on.
