Pretty serious skill with the stripes - That's always difficult for me.

A little GATX fun, this is an MDC car that's been shortened and has lots of Plano parts added. The red diamond is paint, the decals are mostly one-at-a time from various sets.

The five car Great Northern Red River streamliner. Does that mean it's finally done? IIRC, you've been chipping away at this one longer than I've been working on my NJT Comet set. It'll be 5 cars, including 1 Comet I and 4 Comet II cars. It's been delayed while I taught myself CAD and Shapeways, learned DCC lighting, and tried desperately to make that piece-of-garbage poorly-dimensioned Imperial Hobby Productions Comet I into a useable piece of rolling stock....

Started on another caboose. This one will be Soo Line 51. The group SOO 46-55 is probably the closest to the Atlas caboose as-is, if you ignore the cupola and window openings. The others either have the earlier raised cupola or X panel roof, both of which are much more challenging modifications to make. In those cases, I've found its easier to just print a new body. So even though I make a body kit for this caboose, I decided to do the body work old school on this one. I can easily print a replacement cupola, patch windows and add another diagonal panel to the roof and it's much cheaper that way. I started off with an Atlas EV caboose in Chessie paint, which I didn't bother to strip right away. First, I added a diagonal panel to the roof's blank panel: Once it dries in that position I fold it over the peak and attach the rest of it. I have scored the underside of the new panels so they make a clean bend. Here is the completed roof primed: On this side all I've done is paint the windows and scrape down the frames. This shot of the other side shows the next step in the process. I cut out little bits of 0.010" sheet styrene and fill in the opening until it's roughly flush with the exterior wall, then I fill any small gaps with Bondo and sand smooth. I like to prime things to see how smooth my work is, that way I can go back and keep working if it's not right. I don't have any Soo Line power to go with this caboose, but I have a feeling that will change over the next year. I remember buying a Spring Mills Depot caboose in Chessie paint when they first came out just because it was cool. That ended up with me building a stable of four CSX diesels with even more planned.

I don't know how or why it ended up in middle of the desert, but Soo 53 was about a mile away, until it moved to downtown Phoenix a few years ago. I guess some upper Midwest snow bird/railfan, or someone got a "good deal." Soo 53 Cave Creek, AZ
