Hi guys! Starting out with a little "varnish". Snowbirds temporarily getting away from the cold northeastern blast on the southbound Seaboard Coast Line Champion in 1968!

Some progress shot of my 3 car F60GH project, here I've scratch built the cut bar bracket and bent some wire plus some very helpful Plano parts. All painted, the cars are just about ready to weather. The M551s and an M5 wrecker, just a general question for those who have done it, I need to wrap the main weapon barrels up to look like canvas - care to share your method for the most realistic look. Because GP30s are cool!

I've been behind the power curve for the last few weeks, but these two cars are ready for weathering. Nothing is done until it's weathered, but I needed them off the bench so I could get back to working on track. Dan Kohlberg decals on a Branchline kit. Kadee ladders, Plano brake platform, scratchbuilt cut levers, and Tangent trucks. Sorry, different proto photo, but you get the idea. www.rr-fallenflags.org/ic/icg516072akg.jpgMildly rebuilt Details West 50' plug door foobie. No longer a foobie. Again with Dan's decals, it's a 90% match for a series of ICG cars converted from plug doors. Kadee door, ladders and brake gear, Plano platforms and cut levers, Tangent trucks. I modified the side sill with styrene and Archer rivet decals, which are much less visible after paint and before weathering. It needed more underframe detail, so I scarfed the brake rigging and plumbing from an Atlas Evans plug door. Not sure if it's even close to correct, but looks pretty good at eye level. www.rr-fallenflags.org/ic/icg590277alx.jpgA quick before/after shot. Despite being a foobie, I don't have the heart to get rid of the GB&W car...it's one of my first weathering projects and I just like how it turned out.

Worked on a customers Saginaw Valley engine this week. Relettered from an Atlas New England Central engine. Still have a handful of details to add, and of course paint touchup.

I was digging through a box that has a few old junker motors in it, like blue box SD9s, FP45s and a Rivarossi U25C. I found an old blue box SD40-2 dummy that I had painted for C&NW. I always wanted a C&NW motor to run with my UP power, since I saw them all the time on coal trains in Fort Worth. I figured I could get a new C&NW body and trim off the frame pins, reshape and detail the fuel tank, body mount the couplers and use some Cannon parts I had on hand. After having no luck finding an Athearn shell in C&NW, I found a Kato body in UP paint and some Athearn handrails so I bought the parts. The frame required a lot of modification and the shell only a little. I did have to plug all the handrail holes and redrill for the Athearn parts, but otherwise only a little trimming on the inside to get the Athearn frame on. Other than the parts I already had on hand, I'm out 28 bucks to resurrect this old blue box junker. And it was fun. I finally broke down and got a UP SD40-2 from Scale Trains. Will go good for run through power.

And that sort of sums up why we do this. All the other stuff can take over and send us down bad tangents (is there a bad Tangent?), but if you had fun, that means it was a success! Jim L

I finally broke down and got a UP SD40-2 from Scale Trains. Will go good for run through power. I just visited a club nearby. They must have had two dozen Scale Trains locomotives on that layout. Those guys were having a great time and couldn't stop raving about them. I like the two I have, too. If I didn't already have a dozen Athearn SD40-2s I'd be more inclined to buy more of the Scale Trains model. Fortunately for me they came out with the C39-8s and the tunnel motors.

It's been a long time in coming, but I finally finished the super detailing of a good friend's Athearn Alco RS3 painted as SP&S #80. Not a easy task as I need to create a lot of custom parts and it required a lot of research. But I'm happy with the results now. Just need to paint the details and put on the handrails.
