On another forum I found out that ExactRail posted an ad on MR June issue where three new locomotives are anticipated: SD40-2, C30-7 and SW1200. I live in Italy and here the June issue is not available yet. Can anybody confirm ? Raffaele Galiano

The ad in the June MR was nothing more than a laundry list of "projects" Exactrail would like to do some day. I wouldn't start saving my money up yet.....

Actually there are 5 Locos mentioned in the add: C30-7 C36-7 SD40-2 SW-1200 SW-1 Some has also said there is a SD40 also but I have not found it yet. I have gone half blind :(trying to read all the micro typed listing of cars and locos but I am still going through it piece by piece

...you guys missed #30 on their list, the SD40... ...for those who don't wish to wade through the list trying find them all, here's the numbers: 13/SD40, 132/C36-7, 229/SD40-2, 254/SW1200, 256/SW1, and 277/C30-7... ...for me, there's still room for a definitive SD40-2. These are probably all based on work done by Chris Clune, who's work we've all seen on the Athearn tunnel motors and the SD50's. If I can get my hands on some SD40-2's that are equal in detail and quality to those tunnel motors then I've most definitely got room for at least four of them, if not more...

As for the June ad... Anybody who believes the ad is simply not thinking about the math...
Even at 12 projects a year - what the BIG guys like Athearn and Atlas even have trouble doing (even in great economic times) with a vast dealer network - doing some 280+ projects will only take a little OVER 23 YEARS... That's right, just a bit OVER TWO DECADES!
Here's the angle you should consider...
What does a company need to do to promote their products when they've just thrown away the entire dealer network? That's right, they need to get people to their web site and mass e-mail lists... There is no better way to do that than announce an item somebody is interested in, and what you have just likely seen is the hobby's biggest shotgun blast ever trying to cover something each person out there may want - to try to get people to the website... And by the way, each person added to that e-mail list database is another that could be sold off to third parties and potentially make a little side income that way.

Hi Curt, good to see you over here. Yeah, I knew he'd left, I'm just thinking that maybe, just possibly, these are locomotives that he did the tooling for prior to leaving ExactRail. Or, is he still doing tooling for them? We know he did a lot of tooling that ended up in Athearn's hands before ExactRail was ever heard of, so if he's still doing that kind of work, who is he doing it for? I've heard and read in a few rumors that the new Genesis SP caboose is his work, all I know is we still need a 100% accurate assortment of one of the most common diesels ever built in North America, the SD40-2... ...oh, and as for the ad being a bunch of hype, for sure, anyone who can swallow all that as gospel should see me about all the bridges I've got for sale... cheers, Lorne Miller

These two models share the same basic dimensions and I can think of at least 15 different paint schemes, covering all the major railroads of the eigthies and nineties, with the exception of SP and the Canadians. Chris isn't tooling anymore, he's retired. ER has no locomotives on hand tooled by Chris. As far as I know, they have locomotives on hand at all.

Raffaele Galiano Hi Raffaele, ...my comment on an ExactRail SD40-2 was in faint hope that there may have been some further work available by Chris Clune who also did the Athearn SD40T-2 and 45T-2's. These are masterpiece models of an important sub type of the SD40-2 and if Chris had also done the SD40-2 I'd prefer to have one that was tooled by him... ...we'll have to wait and see what IM's SD40-2's look like, there are errors on the CN wide cab version that they've put out, so I hope they're careful with the rest of the SD40-2's they've announced... cheers, Lorne Miller

Second generation EMDs are pretty much covered. I think it's safe to assume that Athearn will have various models of 4-axle EMD power available for some time. They've done a "good enough" (did I actually say that?!) job on the RTR SD40-2, that i'm not really looking for the definitive version. They done the most, if not all, of the Tunnel Motor variants, and now they have the GP7/9s.
Exactrail needs to show us something new, not just a supposed better version of something that is already being produced. How about a P30CH? or a C415? An SDP40 or SDP45? U25/28C? SD70M with flared radiators and square nose?

Wellll..... If we're gonna wish for Exactrail or anyone else to produce some updated locos, I'm with Craig in wanting a nice, updated, SW-1, though I'd be fairly content if Walthers ever re-released their SW-1. I'm Also with Donnell in one respect, A C-415 in SP&S/BN would be welcomed, here.

Yes, it has been done to death but nobody has made a killer Toosh Dah yet The same was true of the GP38-2 until Athearn's latest announcement. I've seen only preproduction, but there's little doubt it's the killer. And it probably won't prevent others from making more GP38-2s. The Atlas Trainman can be forgiven because it was intended to be a low-end model and probably designed by a different team than their front line products. The P2K can't be forgiven, but can be explained in that it happened during the whole gear-ratio-of-the-month-club era and clearly someone just wasn't paying attention, even when the model was attempting to do multiple variants and phases. But that's ok with me - the failure of both opened the door for Athearn - already sitting on the best available GP38-2 - to make the killer. Oh yeah, didn't Bachmann make one too? I forget.... I tend to think that if the GP38-2 and its successors (possible GP40-2, or even GP50?) are a hit, we may see a killer Toosh Dah 4-5 years down the road, assuming it's even practical to make at that point as an affordable plastic model. IMO of all of the milestone models, the Athearn SD40-2 was the most revolutionary. Even though it's a bit dated even with its multiple revisions, it paved the way for much that has followed since 1983 - all from a seed planted by a thorn-in-the-side upstart who was the S in between the G and the B. The next milestone was less than two years later - the intro of the Kato drive. The tooling of the Toosh Dah has been surpassed many times since 1983, but the Kato drive has not. 27-28 years later, nothing better has come along. Andy

I used to purchase brass diesels from Overland before the Genesis line came out, but now would not spend the extra money since many of the Genesis line products are extremely good overall. I noticed the new handrails have been improved also. Some of the models you mentioned are really great and now the after market for parts and super detailed work is much less as suppliers seem to be going away for parts. Larry

And apparently there's a market for more than one manufacturer. I just can't get excited about another mediocre F40PH, or another SD40-2 with different problems than the other eleventy-seven out there. I guess the last time I had any genuine interest in a mid-line model, it was the Trainman GP39-2. Fortunately they didn't botch it the way they did the GP38-2, and it's a loco I can use but only in a B-fleet capacity. And the RS36, which is hardly state of the art but no worse than their classic RS11, which is Kato based and I used it to make a Superfleet model - and I can do the same with the RS36. But another also-ran like Intermountain's SD40-2 is the biggest yawn since the Atlas Genset... for me anyway, can't use it. I can understand why IM did the Canadian Toosh Dah, but doing a straight version seems like a mistake unless you can substantially better what's out there. I'm not seeing it. What parts suppliers have "gone away"? Granted, it has been a long time since Detail Associates put out anything new, but they're still with us. So are Details West, Cannon, Tichy, et al. No doubt sales have suffered due to the increased detail and road-specificity of RTR models, but the parts are still available. Andy

Andy I was thinking of Overland and Cal Scalem, which were mainly brass cast parts. I believe someone did purchase Cal Scale but I have not been able to get many new parts any longer. It could be my local shop but I did call several places and none were available any longer. One item I was looking for was the brass horn set for one of my SF F7 units and found the brass parts have been out of stock for some time and have not been cast for a longer time. It might just be what I am looking for that is not make or out of stock. Another item I need really badly is the Timken roller caps for the Hi Level cars and now they seem to be gone or out of production. Larry Larry

Hey Zeph...CalScale was purchased by Bowser a while ago and they are slowly reissuing many parts. They recently re-released the 3-chime airhorn with all bells facing forward used on PRR GP7's ;D ...a beautiful thing.

When I attended the Western Prototype Modelers meet in April, the speaker from Exactrail stated that they planned on releasing several locomotives in the near future. I discussed this in detail on the old Atlas Forum.
