^ Thanks for the input. I had a feeling the lettering was off & at this point it may be too late for Walthers to fix.
Would Herald King C100 decals be a suitable fix for the end-modeller?

Font is definitely wrong.
Seems the Soo hysterical society would be happy to help....

I'm not well read on the Soo but even I can see the lettering is off. That said, I see a ton of superdetailing potential there.

The SOO painted version is now showing as sold out. I assume there is no chance of Walthers fixing the lettering at this point.
How easy is it to remove Walthers lettering without damaging the paint? I am hoping to avoid a full repaint.

All schemes including SOO and undecorated are now showing on the Walthers website as 'in stock, new arrival' for an MSRP of $34.98US.
Remember these are in the budget-minded Mainline series, so no fine detailing is expected out of the box.

SOO version (910-8707) now says 'discontinued when sold out'. Does this suggest they may be fixing the lettering on the next run?

With Walthers, it's hard to be sure.

On rolling stock and locomotives, Walthers generally does a one time limited run per road number. Once they are sold through, they are discontinued. If a paint scheme is rerun, it gets a new road number and sku.

SOO is now showing 'Out of Stock, Availability: Discontinued' with the undec also out of stock but just "temporarily" out.
That was a pretty fast sell-out!
I did politely reach out to Walthers (as jblibrey described in another thread) to discuss the lettering.

Sounds similar to the 60' Mainline flat cars.

I got and paid for an invoice for my Soo Line caboose today. Now I just have to wait for it to get here.

Hi Colin, thanks for your post. What are your plans for this caboose?

Post by Colin 't Hart on Apr 30, 2019 0:27:09 GMT -8
I will probably use it as-is for the foreseeable future, but I'll have to get it in my hands first to make a judgement. I also have an Atlas caboose with a too-low cupola...
They will be used for interchange operations. I have other projects which have higher priority.

Has anyone seen photo of the opposite of the caboose? Walthers only seems to show the one side. I'm curious about the windows arrangement.

I believe tht is the same side as Walthers shows. I'm looking for the opposite side. Thanks

Looks like they've kept the bent end railings as a carryover from the bay window models....

A quibble that I have is the fact that roofwalks/end ladders were not supplied for the cars that had them. The SOO's cars came with 'em. Seems this could have been added, and devised so that the modeler could remove. May have to see if the Plano part will work without too much modification.
I know, it's Walthers Mainline series...but still.

Soo cabooses stopped being delivered with running boards beginning with 46-55 in 1972. The Walthers model represents cabooses in series Soo 56-145 built in 1973. They were also not built with running boards.

I know, it's Walthers Mainline series...but still. Your comment " The SOO's cars came with 'em" suggests that you believe all SOO wide vision cabooses were the same. They weren't. The Walthers model is most accurate for the numbers indicated by Ryan and while you could simply add a Plano running board set, your model would still not be accurate. Reason being is the pre-56 prototypes also had various different roof panels/colours, different body and cupola end configurations and a different body side window arrangement.

For those who want them, M. B. Klein now shows the Mainline series wide vision cabeese in stock in 6 paint schemes -- no undecorated that I've noticed -- with from 4 to 6 available in each, at a discounted price.

I stand corrected regarding the roof walks for the Soo Walthers cars. I do realize there were several variants on the W/V cars.

Regarding this paint scheme, might anyone know what matching decals are available? Microscale set 87-1537 appears to have the correct beaver logo and white sill stripes but the "SOO 94" road number on the sides and ends is a bit odd to me. Does anyone here recognize that font and have suggestions for matching decals?
Hopefully one of the decal mfrs eventually offers the full caboose set to save future interested modellers from having to piece the lettering together this way. Or perhaps Walthers could offer a future run of their model already painted this way.
Also, I see that CP failed to mask the remaining windows prior to applying Dullcote to their model.

They're plastic, Lexan I believe, and were hazed and crazed up so bad 20 years ago one couldn't see out of them. Saw a couple with 12 gauge slugs embedded in them.
