Happy Easter All, Before heading out to enjoy the day with my family I had the chance to take a few shots on what has turned out to be a beautiful Spring morning. D&RGW 3130 and 3129 were built in 1983 to replace two units that were destroyed in a wreck, they're past the end the time I model (anymore about '75-'76 for most of my stuff) but they are in fact, my fave GP40-2s as they are late production models. There was just no way I was going to let these two units slip past, I had to have them - timeline be damned. I decided to very lightly weather the pair so they would look as though they had just recently been delivered. There's just a bit of AK Interactive chalk on these along with some selective coating with the airbrush. The units were gloss coated first, then toned down with semi gloss, the upward facing surfaces were given a light coat of dull to tone them down further and seal the chalks. Here the pair are trailing an earlier '74 built sister, there's some dramatic clouds massing over the Olympic Peninsula in the far distance. Finished this Kadee 50'PS1, it's weathered entirely with chalks from AK Interactive and Bragdon Enterprises. Built in June of '69 the model is perfect for my layout, likely coming off the Rock Island at Denver, CO. It was so nice I grabbed a couple other recently finished cars for some outdoor pics. Happy Easter!

I've finally gotten back into doing a little modeling. I'm working on a Cannon & CO kit for the Union Pacific GATC 50'1" box car. It's been going together well. Finished the underframe for the most part - not 100% accurate, but it looks pretty close. Used a Moloco underbody and various parts plus some scratchbuilt parts. It's been interesting as I packaged this model plus the tools/etc that I thought I would need while I'm over in Poland. Looks like I'm short a couple pieces of styrene for the plug door so I placed an order with a company in Germany and we'll see how long it takes for the parts to arrive. Shipping from the States takes up to four weeks. Ugh. I placed the air reservoir in the wrong location on the underframe. Wasn't satisfied after viewing and studying the relatively few prototype photos that I could find and went back and changed it to be located in the center of the car like the prototype. One thing is for certain, trying to glue a piece of .010 x .010 styrene strip straight using ad hoc tools and techniques is a challenge. I'll work on the stirrups next while I wait on the parts.

Good morning from cloudy, cool and rainy Northeast Ohio! Managed to finish a couple of cars this week! Atlas FMC 5077CF 50' Double Door Boxcar kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red, Black and Aluminum Paints then lettered with Herald King Decals. This was one of 225 Cars ordered by the WP for carrying lumber. Proto 2000 PS 4427CF Covered Hopper Kit, substituted a Plano Metal Roofwalk for the plastic one in the kit (drilled about 50 No. 79 Holes for the roofwalk supports). Car was painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray Paint and lettered with Oddballs Decals. I know Tangent is doing this car now, but I have a raft of these Proto 2000 cars and there is nothing wrong with them, so more of them will be done. One of 1,000 cars in the order to haul grain in the grain growing areas the Rock Island served. They also ordered the earlier version of the 4427 and the speed lettered version after this car. Over time the Rock Island sidelined thousands of 40' boxcars used in the grain hauling business with these new covered hoppers. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

Got some Kadee Logging stuff done this week. They are actually really nice kits, considering their age. Yes - Those are Link & Pins (Foothill Model Works). They still need to be numbered, and then weathered. Need to get some better wheels for them yet as well.

While I have not posted in a while, I have been busy with other projects - just not all of them model railroad related. One of the latest projects was rebuilding couple Spectrum HO Shays. I bought one of them around the time that my wife and I gotten married. The second one was given to my son as a gift from my father. Unfortunately, they both fell victim to the the gears failing from being over-stressed. I probably should have used the NWSL parts instead of the Bachmann replacement parts, but time will tell. Another project that I have been working on is a Jordan Products Mack AC Railbus. This is a static model with a full interior in the passenger and baggage compartments. I painted it to match the Mack Railbus used on the BC&G that initially came from from the PRR by way of the Artemus-Jellico Railroad - abandoned coal-hauling shortline in Eastern Kentucky. I have also finished couple Accurail 36' boxcars. The only thing that I did to the L&N boxcar was to replace the Andrews trucks that came with the kit with some sprung Bettendorf trucks that came with a Rib-Side Cars kit. The NC boxcar received Hi-tech air hoses and bent-wire uncoupling levers in addition to a pair of P2K trucks. Both cars ought to have 40-ton trucks instead of the 50-ton trucks I used. I may tack the correct trucks onto an order from Westerfield. An "unicorn" of mine has been a Spectrum USRA 2-6-6-2 Mallet. Last weekend, I found and purchased a C&O H-5 at a local train show. Interestingly, I purchased it from the same vendor in which I bought a C&O USRA 0-8-0 several years previously. I still need to weather the 2-6-6-2 as it looks more like an excursion locomotive with the striping and white-wall tires. While I already have a C&O K-4, which is more of a mainline locomotive. However, the H-5 would be more appropriate slowly prodding up a curvy, mountainous branch with 10 or so hoppers - my new idea for a home layout.

This was one of 225 Cars ordered by the WP for carrying lumber. Rick Jesionowski Nice WP box car. I always have wondered why Atlas hasn't run that model in that as-delivered door version versions. Hopefully they will some day. I did a photo search and wasn't able to find any matching the WP logo scheme; I assume you were working from a photo Rick? It appears that FMC 5077 double door box car has only been run once in 2013, and here it is 6 years later and no additional runs of that model. Hopefully they didn't loose the molds or something.

Yes, I see it was the same 5077 box car in an earlier series with the WP logo now, series 38026-38125. I'd like to see Atlas run both versions - as delivered and with original doors. Hopefully they still have the tooling as it's been 6 years and only issues one run of the 5077 cu ft FMC.

I see somebody else answered but I had a picture in my Freight Cars Journal book of the Western Pacific Freight Car Roster that went to the UP. The diagram that came with the decal also matched the picture. I too would like this car rerun with undecorated kits as I have more of these decals to use. Rick Jesionowski

Who needs Atlas to run it? Rick has shown how well it can be done without the wait.

Great if you have time and are set up to paint etc. I basically have no hobby time at home until basement finished, then layout building will be next in line. I do plan to set up a vented paint booth eventually. So yeah I would like to see Atlas offer a predec. I don't mind waiting.
