Been busy doing other things the past few weeks, so was finally glad to get something done.
95% done with these IMRC covered hoppers. Just weathering. One was a kit, one was RTR. However on both, IMRC used BN numbers on an originally FW&D car, so I changed the reporting marks. Decals were some ISP decals I had for other types of covered hoppers and an alpha numeric set from highball products. First time I ever tried anything like this. Also got my Scaletrains SD40-2s in. Glad the coupler pocket redesigned to fit normal whisker couplers.
I also picked up a cheap Kato GP35 shell to try to plop on a spare proto 2000 GP30 drive. I know it's backwards from what most people do; but I think it'd be ok for have $20 into an engine. Besides, my kato motors keep going bad on me for some reason.

Nice looking hoppers - BN is one of my favorite schemes! Work continues on the basement once we got some house and car related jobs done. Wife and I put on the "final" coat of sky blue on the basement walls and Lowes didn't tint the paint correctly so there are two shades of blue on the walls, which means will have to paint over. Got a refund for the paint and since their tint machine can't make two gallons of paint match. Will have to buy more and throw them all in a big bucket next time to make sure all same shade of blue - go back Jack and do it again. Also working on the basement bathroom which will be nice to have while working on the layout I hope to start in a 2 or 3 more months. Hopefully will start on the drop ceiling on Memorial Day weekend. Also shopping for flooring. Fun fun! Here is the basement after the tinted primer coat - yeah, they screwed up that too - two different gallons of paint, two different shades. Will be going to a different Lowes next time and mix all together. Now that the Amtrak San Francisco Zephyr Genesis SDP40F's are announced by Athearn, I've been hunting down mid-1970's era passenger cars typical of that "dogs breakfast" train. I rode it two times and have always wanted to model it. So far I've had been fortunate to find many passenger cars that appear to be good matches for that train in the pointless arrow scheme, and a few in the phase II. While the SFZ did not normally travel over the D&RGW it did detour at least once. Dome cars are the challenge - apparently only certain domes were allowed west of Denver for the trip over Donner Pass. SP allowed their 3/4 domes to be used, and it looks like ex-NP/GN domes were used as well based on video's I"ve seen.

I've been thinking of selling some dog's breakfast Amtrak cars for a while now, 1 each phase 1 and 2, and 3 phase 3 -- which was introduced in 1976. PM sent. Anyone else interested feel free to PM me.

I have had much better luck with Sherwin Williams and Dunn & Edwards (better paint, better staff, and it has never <yet> not matched). Kelly Moore was the best, but not sure it they are still around, or if they have pulled back to just the Bay Area.

For the flooring, may I suggest you find someone who carries commercial carpet tile overruns? I found a store near me that had them for under $1/sqft. Some of it comes with padding built in, but the one I liked didn't have padding so I added a heavy foam padding that glues down before you add the tile. Get a bucket of leftover flooring glue, as you won't need the whole bucket. Still don't know what I'll do with a 90%-full bucket of flooring cement.... Anyway, it goes down fast, and cheaply, and with the padding is great to stand on for many hours. I bought one extra box of tiles so that when I screw up and spill something I can just replace them. I lined my rolling stock shelves with the extra padding, too. No, that's not MY bike in the photo.

I think you'd have to hurt yourself to get on that bike in the photo! The only thing I have against carpet tiles as the main floor is that this is a basement and I'd rather put down something that can resist water, God forbid, that it ever gets wet or something. I did have water in the last basement so want to avoid that scenario. Some sort of water resistant tile or flooring seems a good idea for the permanent floor and the I could throw some carpet tiles down in the walkways of the layout area for the tootsies. Having to re-mediate the basement in my last home from the water damage included cutting out the bottom foot of drywall in areas where the water was and treat to mitigate any mold etc. I had to learn how to do drywall to restore the finished area's, tape, mud sand and all that fun. At least those drywall skills I learned in the last home gave me the confidence to drywall 700 sq ft of basement in my current home. At purchase: Before final skim coat and primer paint

Stores that are focused on paint sales, and which sell to painting contractors, are far more consistent on custom mixes. That said, Jim's plan of blending his various mismatches in a good recovery. Do the blending labels on the custom-mix cans show the same formulas?

My new house has laminate flooring for the entire finished basement, if anything it will have a throw rug on the floor in front of the layout. I also have two sump pumps, but a number of people in the community have had problems with theirs in the last year, I just checked mine and it seams to be working properly, the water is about 1' below grade but it also seems to stay at that level all the time.

Most of the cans of paint did have blending labels with bar codes, but the machine calibration could have been off, or I think they used two different machines IIRC. A couple of the cans of paint didn't have any labels but we were served by a young girl who couldn't be bothered and had a major high school attitude, rolling her eyes at us and got mad when we questioned the paint handed it with the wrong paint card. Anyone would do the same! We'll go to a different store for the next batch of sky blue paint.
Blending the paint is the only way we can avoid the two different shade scenario again in case the paint computer is not giving consistent color from one can to the next. I didn't mind the difference as much when we did the primer coat as that would be covered over, but the final coat - somethings wrong here and what is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and expecting a different result. I don't want to spend another 5 hours and have this happen yet again! No thanks.
Where I lived before, when it rained alot the sump pump would run constantly. It failed while my wife and I were out of town and that is when the french drain system backed up into the basement and flooded about 2/3rds of the floor soaking most of the carpet and the room with wood laminate flooring.
Hopefully we won't have the same thing happen again, but it seems like a good idea to use a flooring that can resist water just in case. You can get waterproof laminate flooring and that is what my wife is looking at for our current basement. I'd like to use carpet tiles for the walkways which are removable.

I've always found it best to pour some paint from can #2, a bit at a time, about 1/2 through #1 and mix it, continue to do so as you proceed. I live 20 miles from Lowe's or Menards and farther from HD. I hate the extra time spent.
My brother before he retired from it swore by Sherwin-Williams from the S-W store.
I also found out that the big boxes all have different paints at times as they renegotiate their purchase agreements from time to time.

Maybe close to starting some bench work soon?

The room is looking great Jim, I haven't been over here in a while, and haven't seen an update since the taping and muding. I gotta get out of the"same old same old" once in a while, and look around at others.

Thanks Mike. I am posting updates in the Project Archive: atlasrescueforum.proboards.com/thread/3737/jims-layout-progressAfter photobucket did there little stunt, I had to repost manyh of the last layout progress photo's and then onward to the new hours. This weekend plan to add another coat of sky blue since the last several cans didn't match each other exactly, maybe start on the suspended ceiling also.
