Memorial Day Weekend, a time for reflection and thanks to those that gave their lives for our country. Here's D&RGW 40044, built by FMC Gunderson in 11-72 westbound, trailing SD45 5317 late in the afternoon sometime in the mid '70s, high Summer on the Rio Grande.

Excellent!
Wife and I put finishing sky blue coat of paint which bought from a different Lowe's and mixed it all in a five gallon bucket. It's nice and uniform now. Also put on a final white coat on the boxed in ceiling beams.
I'm marking the walls to start the suspended ceiling grid this afternoon.

Managed to get a couple of cars completed this week. First up is an Intermountain Railway FMC 5283CF Boxcar Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Aluminum, Black and Tuscan Red Paints, then lettered with Herald King Decals. Car was used for transporting lumber out of the Pacific Northwest and could be seen all over the country wherever lumber was used. This is an Exactrail PS 4427CF Low Hip Version Covered Hopper Kit, painted with Scalecoat II UP Hopper Car Gray Paint and lettered with Oddball Decals. The Rock Island in the 60's bought thousands of covered hoppers to replace the 40' boxcars formally used in grain service. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

This car looks awesome! I have one Bachmann waiting in the wings and could only hope that it turns out as good as yours!

A good Memorial Weekend to all. Time to reflect on those that gave it all, to keep us free. This is a little project I completed this week, it's a complete scratch build of a MILW terminal (transfer) caboose. The prototype is stored down the street from, and is property of the East Troy Electric RR. www.easttroyrr.org/The complete build is in the MRR forums, here: cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/275861.aspxThanks for looking. Mike.

Hello all and Happy Memorial Day! Much thanks, respect, and gratitude to those that served, are serving, or made the ultimate sacrifice. This probably isn’t a typical photo post. About a week ago, I won an Exactrail NIB PS 4427 grain hopper on eBay for about $23 bucks. I was excite at the great deal I thought I had until I got the car out of the box and heard the “clunk” of loose weights. It seems that Exactrail uses some kind of black tar-like glue that can become brittle and cause the weights to break free. The glue looks like a two part epoxy that wasn’t properly mixed. Fortunately, I was able to remove the roof of the car with little effort, clean off the tar glue (a LOT of work) and reattach the weights. These photos show what I did. The car at the top has no loose weights, but I might remove the factory glue nonetheless. The weights where deburred with a mill file, sanded, and give a good coat of primer. I use GE Silicone because it’s readily available and doesn’t attack the plastic. Previously, I used E6000 glue available from Michael’s, but found that it melts plastic. Hopefully the weight will stay secure now! Thanks for looking! Mark J. Reading, PA

Thanks Donnell, much appreciated. It's my first completely scratch built car. I did have a copy of a plan to follow, and keep things as close as I could. I've learned you can't hide from the macro settings on my camera. Mike.

I used foam carpet tape, will try the silicone stuff if my 4427s do this

The weight was rattling around in side. I contacted Chris Brimely who suggested I turn it upside down and shake it a few times to knock the roof loose. It worked but in my case there was a strong glue joint on one side and it ripped a piece of the upper shell off so it would be visibly damaged. ExactRail has always had great support and being the result, I was sent a replacement box car.
