Today's mail brought me a nice shipment of goodies which included one of the latest run Bluford Shops MP caboose. From what I've been able to gather around here, this model accurately depicts the MP prototype. Packing appears to be the same as prior runs, with an instruction sheet and exploded parts diagram included. There is also a nice axle generator part included in the box. The first thing I did was to replace the oversized Kadee #5 couplers with #158 couplers with trip pins removed. Future work will involve installation of axle generator and weathering on the trucks, couplers and underframe. The model itself is beautiful and in line with what we've come to expect from Bluford:

For years it was tough to be a MoPac modeler...not so much anymore. Those cabooses are just beautiful. Bluford Shops really nailed them.

Yep. After the first run they added a couple of ounces of much-needed weight, too.

They certainly have gotten use out of their transfer caboose tooling, thats for sure.

This caboose is actually a road caboose. MoPac built 351 of them (IIRC) in concert with designs from International Car Co. A lot of the crew members that I knew thought they were "ok"; but rode rather rough...probably due to their short wheel base? Anyway...grateful here that Bluford designed this car in HO scale as a 99.9% accurate MP Shorty caboose. They made some compromises on the draft gear and the lighting...but those could be upgraded if one chose to do so. But, they NAILED the overall length; car body; bay windows; and I really LIKE the screen guides. The end rails are superb as well. This is the type of cabooses we in HO scale have been wanting for some time. And, this is the "benchmark" that I am shooting for with my Sedalia Caboose project.

Very nice model of an interesting caboose. I remember being astounded when I first saw one, at the passenger depot in Independence, MO when I got off an Amtrak train in January, 1986 (I'm pretty sure) before doing research at the Truman Presidential Library for the second time. I'm not sure whether it was still in MP colors or had been reprinted in UP's yellow.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Commuter Rail system acquired one of these, number 13703, which kept its MP number and most of its original paint for many years; I haven't seen it for a while. It was parked for years on the south side of the Fitchburg Route tracks more or less opposite the new Boston Engine Terminal. I'm not sure I ever saw it in a train.

Have you got a rough date for the purchase?

I have a first run SBW caboose from Bluford that is bright red like the photo of the prototype 13328. Are the most recent runs a more subdued shade?
