I picked up some old stock Roco DCC starter sets to flip.
Each one has basically the same old GP40 first sold as an Atlas item 45 years ago with a factory DCC decoder and presumably other upgrades, three of the same old cars AHM sold 3,000,000 of in the same era but now with body mount knuckle couplers and metal wheels, plus their version of EZ track and a controller. Interestingly they come with three 40' freight cars but no caboose.
I presume the decoder is maybe four functions. The question is are they compatible with everyone else's DCC controls and not some oddball proprietary system - anyone know?
Not much about these online except they appear to have been a sales dud, but I didn't pay much more than I've been able to get for beat up old Atlas issue engines so I know I'm not going to get rich from them.
Edit: Going through the box one paper attached to the control is dated 2002, so that's about how old these are. The decoder looks like it has a standard 8 pin plug, other than that these are pretty basic, they even only have one light bulb. Somewhere along the line the drive was redesigned to only have one flywheel.
I can only figure they were a dud because of the dated tooling and they were probably overpriced when new.

A DCC decoder, is a DCC decoder. What goes on in the decoder, is probably propriety, but how a decoder and the command station "talk" to each other, is based on the NMRA standard. Short answer, yes it is compatible.

That's what I figured, but given these have the appearance of an afterthought from stuff made for the European market I wasn't 100% sure. Based on the artwork there are also sets with the FP7 locomotive as well as Euro prototype versions.

Not sure why this was moved, the set in question is HO.

Not sure why this was moved, the set in question is HO. Someone put in a complaint that this topic should be moved to the DCC section. Would you like it moved back?
