Out of town business in Dallas, TX this week left me with zero modeling time, so here's some oldies - In this case they're all models I've built, no taking things out of boxes! Happy Sunday. I like having an F68AH well before ST decided to make one..... MoPac coolness! '60s era KCS fun. TTX Red on an F60KH.

Stellar work as always! I finished paint and decals on my carbon black cars this week. There's still weathering to do so I'm not adding the bits that break off during that process just yet, but I'm calling the models good for now. I'm ready to move on to something else. Anyway, here's how they ended up. This car started off as a Scale Trains Thrall 4727 that I backdated by replacing the roof and side stake details. Like the rest of these carbon black cars it's not perfect, but it's pretty close. This one is how I remember seeing these when I was a kid, with the "Texas Carbon Blacks" logo on the sides. Like the 1974 Thrall 4727 above, there are several compromises with this model, but I think it captures the overall look of the ACF 4589. And this one I showed last week after finishing the decals. I was a little concerned about the decal film showing after it was clear coated, but Tamiya gloss and flat clear took care of that. I promise I'll work on some models with color next.

I managed to get a couple of cars done this week! First is an Atlas ACF 3560CF Covered Hopper Car, removed the cast on roofwalk and crossover platform and replaced with Plano Model parts. Painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals. The DMIR used these cars to deliver Bentonite to the mines in order to make the Taconite Pellots that were delivered to the steel mills. As the steel industry waned, the cars were sold to the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad. Next a Walthers NACC 50' RBL, removed the cast on sill steps and replaced them with A-Line Sill steps and added grab next to the door and over the walkover platform, also added the Moloco NACC Style End of Car Cushioning Pockets. Painted with Scalecoat II Aluminum and Reefer Yellow and lettered with Mask Island Decals. Cars were assigned to the Pillsbury Mill in Bufallo NY and delived the bagged flour throughout the US. An Athearn SP SD45T-2 and SD45 with elephant ears hauling a mixed freight at the Stongsville Model Railroad Club layout. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

I don’t see anything wrong with these “color-less” hoppers. You B&W stuff looks great!

So what's wrong with the hailed Scale Trains cars? Nothing. Their Thrall 4727 is modeled after one built in 1996 and later, which accounts for the majority of cars built to that design compared to around 100 of the 1974 version. By that time, Thrall was using construction methods they'd developed in the mid 70s -- first seen on the 1977 built 5750 hoppers -- including tubular side stakes and internal carlines (roof supports) compared to the H-column side stakes and external carlines of the 1974 and earlier built cars. Since the basic shape of the 4727 didn't change from the original 1974 design to the 1996 version, I just used that model but made the changes to the roof and side stakes. This whole exercise came about because I model the late 80s and I wanted an excuse to use the Scale Trains 4727. The same methods could be used on either of the Scale Trains 5750 hoppers to backdate those cars to 1974 and earlier versions. There are a lot of other detail differences that make those conversions a little more problematic, but I had to overlook a couple things on my model, too.

So what's wrong with the hailed Scale Trains cars? You make it sound like a bad thing what Ryan is doing. Looks like some cool variations to add to those hailed ST cars.
