Here's a teaser, one of several Tangent and Intermountain PS 4750 cars I'm working on, this is one is so new it's still glossy and you can see a bit of the car's rippled side panels, so we're probably just a few months past it's April '74 construction date.
Enjoy your Sunday Gentle men.
Best, Mark Hills
A shot of my PTTX car, FWIW I think the recent Walthers car would be a nice starting point for this.

Nice panel waves. Care to share your method? I've used powders "dabbed" onto the side sheet and then rub them into the angle you want.

Nice subtle panels waves on that Tangent. Here's a couple of 4750's. I'm sorry, I'm pretty sure you've all seen these before. They're both Intermountain, one is a newer version, and the other is very old. And for good measure, here's a Thrall 4750. -Kevin

I have several cars to do and, keep in mind that these are pretty new cars on my mid '70 so mine aren't going to get real dirty even when they're all finished up.
I started by glossing the entire car with Testors glosscote thinned with DuPont 3602, using an Iwata HP-C airbrush. I made some simple paint jigs from styrene, they fit between the panels and allow you to keep from over spraying the ribs. The jigs are of 3 different widths to fit the car's panels.
Here, in place
And all 3
With the model resting in a cradle in the spray booth I airbrushed some really "hot" glosscote on the carside, advancing the paint jigs as I free handed the gloss. Here you can see about half of the Tangent car, this is from a oblique angle to pick up my work lights.
Pictures are always helpful when doing this kind of thing, the model has a ways to go yet.
Here's an Intermountain car that's a little further along, neither it or the Tangent car are finished just yet though.

T Bird thanks for sharing your technique. What exactly is really "hot" Glosscoat? Are you referring to a heated mixture, or something else?

It's glosscote really thinned out with 3602 lacquer so it "re-heats" the underlying gloss and becomes shinier and it flashes off very quickly.

Great photos, Kpack. I'd love to hear your version of working the grime to expose the true green as well.
T-bird, nice jig! So if I'm understanding correctly, you just hit the majority of the side panel with glosscoat, leaving small areas untouched to create the effect?

Still don't have a layout... so in the spirit of 4750cf covered hoppers, here's what's on my workbench. I picked up one of the ExactRail Magor 4750 hoppers last month when they were on sale. I am in the process of kitbashing it to represent one of Union Pacific's 4750 hoppers built by Transco as seen in this photo: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3162135I have modified the high ladders and high handbrake and repainted the car Tamiya Gloss Aluminum. I just got the decals yesterday so hopefully I can find some time to work on it in the coming week. Should be pretty easy to finish. I'm about to the halfway point on ten UPS pups. Just finishing decals and wheels/tires on the other nine, but this one is pretty much done. These were undecorated A-line kits with their decals. The silver decal set is a big improvement over the first ones I built years ago where I painted the silver parts.

Yes, again, to start the process I gloss the whole car, with the jigs in place I'm shooting really thinned out gloss, so it's even shinier. You could just as easily use Semi Gloss or Dullcote depending on how dirty the car is going to get. You really can't go wrong with the clear coatings as you can always re-spray.

Managed to get a little work done this week. First is an Athearn ACF 2970CF Covered Hopper Kit, painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray paint and lettered with Herald King Decals. Cars were purchased to haul Peralite from Magma, AZ to various locations. Second, I managed to finish a 2nd Rock Island 40' PS1 Boxcar Kit w/8' Door, substituted A-Line Sill Steps for the plastic ones in the kit and then painted with Scalecoat II Oxide Red and Black Paints. Car was lettered with a Mask Island Decal set, did two cars as the sets included enough stuff for two cars. Cars were in dedicated service to a manufacturer along the PRR in Columbus, OH. Took my New Haven U25B and C-425 to the club last week with some cars from that era to check them out. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

To all: your paint and modeling work is top notch!
Who says there isn’t any good modeling work on this forum anymore?
Thanks, Mark J.

Its just usually the same thing every week: freight cars on workbenches or the same dioramas. The modeling is exceptional, but repetitive.

Coming from someone who can look at a spartan cab EMD every single day and still love them, repetition doesn't bother me when it comes to things I like.

Feel free to join in and break up the monotony, CSXT. You have a layout, right? I'd love to see more of it! I find well-executed layouts (like Matt Fisher's for example) inspiring. You'll participate in the change you want to see and everyone wins. Otherwise it's just pointless complaining.

FWIW, I'm building a layout but am not going to post pictures of my progress on a hidden staging yard, the freight car models and locomotives I build all get run on my best friend's layout almost every week so they can be tested and adjusted if needed and will be ready to enjoy as my trackwork continues.

While not often, I have posted photos on SPF but I guess they must have been totally forgettable.

While not often, I have posted photos on SPF but I guess they must have been totally forgettable. Twice in two years. Not forgettable, though. You have a killer crossing scene and the light effects were fantastic. Post more, complain less and your problem is solved.

I saw one of those sitting in Queens Gate yard, in Cincinnati, cool to see one as a model. Was this a kit, scratch built, or a kit bash?
