My son is not a troll. And btw, I will happily send you a picture of the ceiling-high stack of Rapido boxes I continue to accumulate. I tend to put my $$$$$ where my mouth is, but am also not afraid of asking the odd difficult question.... They are not calling your son a troll, they are calling you a troll because the facts support the assertion. 1) brand new account apparently created for the purpose of attacking Jason / Rapido Trains. 2) false cries of censorship In the OP's defense, he was a member several months before the current Hong Kong protests started. So I do not believe his sole purpose of being on this forum was intended to start this discussion. I do suspect he is behaving as an activist, rather than a "concerned citizen". Hence he initially asks HERE what Jason thinks instead of simply asking him directly. THAT is clearly an activist move. Ed

The Chinese government is behaving like an adolescent: sometimes being thoughtful and innovative, other times being very selfish. It is not just Hong Kong. I think "business interests" are aware of this, and have "always" felt wary of having close business ties to China.
I like China and its people a lot. But I am also wary of its government.

Jason does read the forums, so publicly asking Jason for a response is a bit confrontational, and could be considered activist as well. I agree with Ed, if the OP simply wanted an response from Jason, he could have gotten it privately by emailing Rapido.

Not a troll. I have seen some very enlightened & thought-provoking replies to my post. That's all I wanted. The fact it has generated this many replies in a short time shows it IS somewhat topical. When the major media outlets are LEADING off newscasts quite often lately with this whole ordeal, surely that somewhat validates raising the discussion. And in response to the comments that cell phones, shoes, computers et al are manufactured in massive numbers from the country in question, I don't see many detailed online videos overtly proclaiming THEY are oh-so-proudly made where they are. If anything, with Nike for eg, its quite subtle actually. Right on Rapido's box it states "proudly made in __________". Please show me where Nike states this. Or Apple. Or Intel. Or whomever. If things continue to escalate in this divisive issue, I can guarantee the term "proudly made in...." will diminish in stature or disappear altogether. Apologists for oppressive governments quieten down when said govts. become MORE oppressive. If things don't get any worse with how the Hong Kong protesters are being treated, I'm sure the status quo regarding all Chinese manufacturing wont change much. If things DO, its almost for certain questions will continue to be raised. And not many will be "proud". Until we hear anything from Jason, I will refrain from further comments about this, as I clearly see it has ruffled some feathers. Errr, synthetic fibres !

I don't have any Rapido products, but instead I wasted an hour looking at countless listings on Ebay but the only listings with enough photos that showed enough of the box just had the claim "Made in China" printed on the box. Must be some other product they have introduced that hasn't filtered down to the secondary market yet.

You and your son feel very strong about this. Have you protested at the Chinese embassy, wrote letters to Washington to let them know your outrage? Better yet, you and your son fly Hong Kong, and get involved in the protest. Travel to China and express your support for the protests. It's easy to sit in the comfort of your home and point your finger at someone that makes toy trains. Stand up, be a man, and get your family on that plane to China. Let us know how that goes.

The SW1200RS, FP7, and recent runs of the F40PH have "Proudly Made At The Rapido (or LRC) Factory in ________ [which factory location] China" added on the box, whereas earlier releases for years did not (just "Made in China"). And I think I have a pretty good idea why: for a few years now, Jason has been mentioning people have been making racist and xenophobic comments on their Facebook and Youtube pages about their factory ("you employ slave labour", "commie this, commie that", "you're traitors for not making your trains in the good ol' US-of-A", "Rapido is really a Chinese company since they make their trains in China, their Canadians are just puppets", yadda yadda). Jason has brought this up many times in newsletters and on video, and it's also evident in videos how proud he is about his factory workers. He probably got sick of all of it and added "Proudly" to address all the closet racists out there. If you want to be pedantic about it, "Proudly Made At The Rapido Factory in Guangxi Province, China" doesn't necessarily mean "Proudly Made in China". You can be opposed to the politics of the country, while still being proud of your factory and workforce. Just like a company putting "Proudly Made in the USA" doesn't mean your company is endorsing Trump or the current political climate, nor should it (does Kadee endorse Trump since all their products say Made in the USA? Duhhh, no...but some SJW activists wouldn't shy down from twisting it like that if it benefited their argument ("You put Made in the USA as a dog-whistle to the far-right naught-zee huwhite-supremacist Drumpt voters!!!!!!"). IMHO, the original thread creator is making a mountain out of a molehill of this without being aware of the prior context. It's a word, get over it, or live up to your SJW principles and sell all your Rapido trains in protest (but we all know when push comes to shove, the people who shout the loudest tend to not practice what they preach).

Then a suggestion, don't act like one. Multiple postings of the same topic, false cries of censorship, an account (almost) exclusively used for the controversy, attacking one person/company instead of the entire industry, are all the hallmarks of trolls. When the major media outlets are LEADING off newscasts quite often lately with this whole ordeal, surely that somewhat validates raising the discussion. It's called hypocrisy / opportunism, and if you so wish a good teaching opportunity for your son. For the last 5 years or so China has been forcibly putting citizens in re-education camps, but nobody in the west cared (perhaps because they are Muslims?). The Hong Kong protests have been going on for 6 months, and nobody cared until the NBA threw one of their employees under the proverbial bus. It's only news because the NBA is involved, and the protestors (sadly) are just background to an artificial outrage around the NBA.
Another teaching moment - few countries in the world are perfect and thus all have varying degrees of problems.
Despite it's problems I suspect most Chinese living in China would consider themselves lucky compared to say many people in the middle east - certainly haven't heard of China killing a journalist in an embassy lately like Saudi Arabia - amongst many other oppression issues that make China look like a paradise. Yet I don't see many people running to get rid of oil, and I suspect a lot of people around the world will happily watch (and attend) the world cup in 2022 despite media reports of deaths of workers in the thousands building the facilities.
And nobody changed their clothing buying habits when that garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh.
Or closer to home, how about the ongoing lack of action by the Canadian and Ontario governments to deal with the mercury poisoning at Grassy Narrows and the ongoing deaths from the lack of action.

Being against an oppressive government is not racist.
The term is thrown around so much it has lost all meaning and is simply a cheap and easy slander when one doesn't have a valid response.

Yes, and there's a difference between making xenophobic comments about the people in videos from another culture that are assembling your model trains, and stating that you oppose an oppressive government.

We are in an era of Global commerce and that is not going to change. China is involved in so much of what we buy and use in nearly every facet of life these days it is hard to say where to draw a line on things when you see what is happening in Hong Kong. I model the NH and the best models are made manufactured in China by a company based in Canada. While I support the protesters in Hong Kong, I am not sure if it is practical to boycott everything made in China. I know people in the Rapido organization and have seen presentations in person and I there video clips of the factory operations in China. I think if employees were not treated properly they would not be doing business there. Not doing business with entire countries more often than not hurts the average citizen much more than the leaders. All that being said, I am waiting for my NH diner to be delivered from Rapido.

Maybe the time has come for manufacturing to consider Viet Nam as a better place to do business. Doug Doug - One of the companies that my company distributes product for with is doing just that. They are currently manufacturing in China, but are looking to expand into Viet Nam. I don't know if it's just an expansion at this point, or if they would replace their current operation in China...

Better, in that it hasn't been chosen for a trade war with the US? Yes.
Better, in that it treats its citizens better? Not exactly.
1 Party rule with a disdain and punishment for dissent, etc. mean that it isn't much better than China, and depending on the issue at hand may be worse.
As I said, China has it's issues but then again so do many/most countries around the world to various degrees. You aren't going to magically find a terrific country to move manufacturing to while at the same time getting the low (relative) wages that make our current hobby products possible.

I suspect that most nations with prevailing low wages are run by authoritarian governments with some degree of human rights violations.
On a related matter, last spring we replaced the tile in our laundry room floor. After the adjacent room was flooded by a broken tankless water heater (yes tankless water heaters can still flood the garage, etc.) we decided to extend the new vinyl tile into that adjacent room. The price of the tile increased 30% in six months. We were told that when purchased the tile in March, we purchased just before a scheduled 5% price increase. Apparently the tile is now subject to a tariff. I did not realize that tariffs were already in effect, but after Googling the matter, I found that vinyl flooring was subject to a 25% tariff starting on May 1st. Effective October 1st, there is a 30% tariff on vinyl flooring. So I guess I am lucky that I purchased flooring that was imported before October 1st or else I would have paid an additional 5%.

Completely unnecessary to mention particular candidates and who may or may not vote for them. Why mention Trump ?? Same as someone bringing Obama's name or Hillary's into this. I only spoke of particular countries. I believe Judge Doom has contravened forum rules by having to name any particular individual. As a Canadian I could care less about American politics. But why upset a certain segment of the modelling population that may have voted for that politician ? I can only imagine if I had brought up Bernie Sanders name (in a derogatory way) in any of this.....like WHO cares ?? Discussing a countrys' govt, be it China, USA or Canada does not create un-needed divisiveness like bringing certain INDIVIDUALS into a forum discussion would. "Far right supremacist Drumpt voters" ?? OMG You just divulged more personal political opinion than anyone needs to know.....(nevermind judging a whole voting bloc). Whereas I was simply asking the question of supporting a manufacturer in a country that has questionable human rights conditions for its people. Yes, "judge", there's quite a difference. Maybe this will effectively shut down this particular thread....or was that your intention ?? I'm sure this can be discussed WITHOUT bringing in your personal views on certain politicians. Nobody needs to know what you may think of that damn border wall either !!

Look back at the posts....YOU brought Trump into this, not me. Don't really care in WHAT context. Why even bring his name up ? Biggest lightning rod for arguments possibly EVER. Why don't you go bring HIS name up somewhere else ? When a manufacturer states "proudly made in __________" and that country has a dreadful record of human rights (and worsening daily), its fair to raise the subject. If that's "bashing Jason", I guess I'm guilty. I GUARANTEE in the current climate if any product says "proudly made in the USA", there will be blowback from consumers in dozens of countries around the world. Or at least COMMENTS made regarding that pride. Where I live (major city in western Canada) there is a HUGE anti-U.S. sentiment. I'm not saying its a good thing, or that I agree with it, just saying that attitude is very prevalent. Yet its NOT okay for me to question a "proudly made in China" pkg. advertisement ?? Its too bad you consider all this "nonsense". From the # of replies to this posting in a relatively short period of time, I certainly wouldn't call it a dumpster fire. You sound like the kind of problematic individual that sits on apartment complex councils (we call it strata here in Canada) that loves to talk down at others...look at your last paragraph. Patronizing much ?? FAR more hostile than me. The funny thing is I probably own a few thousand dollars worth of Rapido products more than you do.....would you like photographic proof ? I can almost assure you Jason doesn't mind THAT kind of "cognitively impaired" customer !!

I can almost assure you Jason doesn't mind THAT kind of "cognitively impaired" customer !! In case you didn't notice, this is a US model RR forum with a large majority of participants being in the US, so you can keep your anti-US views to yourself, thank you very much. You seem to have no problems talking about everything political and activist about human rights and China manufacturing, but when someone mentions the word "Trump", even just in passing, you go into total meltdown mode like an impetulant child and throw a temper tantrum, trying to accuse members of high crimes and get them banned. Grow up, he's president of the US, and like him or not there are people on this forum who voted for him. And speaking of China, the US tariff issues are a threat to the ENTIRE model RR industry, despite what you may think in Canada about being safe from that (which you're not, as you'll be paying more too since most product comes from US manufacturers, thus coming from the US before being sent into Canada). If you're one of those SJW activists where just using the name "Trump" triggers you so much, maybe you shouldn't be participating here, and find a safe space in Canada you can talk freely without the dreaded "T-word" ever passing anyone's lips. But your moral high-ground is kind of lost, given your Prime Minister's "blackened" reputation around the world right now 😆 OH, you still have Rapido products? hundreds and thousands of dollars of? Why? Because holding you up to your own standard, you are therefore complicit in supporting an oppressive regime with an abysmal human rights record, and to the tune of thousands of dollars more than me. Why don't you sell all those Chinese trains and buy some that are "Made in Canada" or "Made in the USA"?? We're waiting...

"Anti US views" ?? Pointing out America is not liked very much in Vancouver BC Canada does not mean I hold those views. Its a FACT. Go to ANY sporting event here, particularly an international one. Belarus can be playing USA and the Belarusians will be cheered lustily. The Americans will get boo'ed That's just how it is on the "left coast". At an area auto-race near here an AUSTRALIAN was going against a Yank. The Ozzy was cheered like he was a hometown hero ! Sorry you never get here to witness that. I am not part of that ideology of dislike to our southern neighbours, but its true the climate is like that here. That DONT make me anti-American !! Its only recently I have begun to question Chinese products. Seeing what is goin' on towards the protesters in Hong Kong has made me question things. That's all. I don't hate Jason. Or Rapido. As for buying "made in America", I have written (emailed) Athearn several times requesting they CONSIDER producing a Genesis-level particular HO Canadian loco. I either don't hear back OR I get a short, brief, dismissive reply. Jason's company is different, & THAT'S why I have spent so much $$$$ on their products. They DO "aim to please". I'll try to put it in perspective for you......imagine if your Dad was a big Ford or Buick guy. For years he bought their automobiles loyally. Then YOU began to yourself as you went through car buying as you aged. Then you heard or saw that the conditions at those particular cars' manufacturing plants were not ideal. Maybe conditions were not great for the workers, or the toxic waste from manufacturing was dumped in a nearby lake or river. Heck, maybe enough females weren't being hired at the plants. Does it mean you have to scrap or sell the auto's you have ? Of course not. Its just maybe something you begin to THINK about. And that's all I'm doing. I have actually been told by a Canadian-owned manufacturer of aftermarket car parts where the majority of said parts are made in China, that the REASON they do so much over there is because the environmental red-tape is significantly lower than in Canada. So yes, its cheaper doing business there but at a detriment to safe pollution levels. How do you feel about THAT ?? Is THAT okay to question ?? For now I WILL continue to buy Rapido stuff, but if things worsen in regards to the Hong Kong scene I may well reconsider. I have every right to do that, and every right to state that on a model railroad forum such as this....Geez...I don't hate America, and I don't hate Rapido. I don't even hate YOU !! Some of my best memories were travelling as a kid often to Sacramento Calif. in the 1970's with my Family and visiting "Lyman E. Cox" store in Arden Fair mall there. My goodness what a darn candy-store of train merchandise.

Wow, this thread pushes ALL your hot buttons. Have you considered a hobby?
I hear stamp collecting is pretty benign.

Simply trying to explain to judge doom that I don't hate the U.S. When something is explained to him he thinks the messenger holds that view too. I don't. So dumping waste into rivers and lakes (that you KNOW goes on more in China than in North America)is a "hot button" issue ?? Again, am trying to point out that China's way of doing business may not be as ethical as other countries where environmental rules and regulations are tighter. Of course that adds to the co$t of the product, hence it (manufacturing) going to China....Are ALL you Atlas forum people defenders of the big Red country ?? Just wondering....And please, tell the judge to leave our just re-elected Prime Minister alone. He's a heck of a lot less clown-like than that orange guy you got running things...And riogrande, edgecrusher, etc, all that love gevo's comment so much...be sure to top up yer gas-guzzling pick-up truck today....I hear the Syrian sitch is raising gas prices soon ! Oh, and stamp collecting ?? Meh...emails' killing the stamp & letter thing. Better for the environment too.

Don't feed the troll, guys. This ID clearly has nothing to do in their life other than drum up controversy and sit here typing long msgs like some klaxon social media cyclone. I've seen this type posting on other forums and all they do is disrupt and repost political topics from news media sites that have nothing to do with the forum. They add no value and simply blast the forum with their buzzwords, rhetoric and inflammatory phrases to bait people into their pointless debates.
Personally I think they should be banned altogether as it's obvious from their posts they're only here to inflame. Don't need them here.
If we simply ignore their posts, they'll get bored and go and ruin someone else's forum.

I will make a couple brief statements and then bow out of this discussion:
If people in Canada hate the current American president, it is most likely due to the American news media which never report any of the thousands of good things he has actually done. They go largely unreported, because our media in the U.S. is largely (but not yet completely) controlled by liberals, period.
I support our President and pray he will continue to stand for the values upon which America was founded. Everybody has a right to free speech under our Constitution (though some want to burn it). That also means neither I myself nor anybody else has a constitutional right to shout down opposing views, though that IS what is happening here. Sad we are at this point.
I have wonderful friends in this hobby who hold completely OPPOSITE political views from mine; when I visit them and their outstanding layouts, I may even laugh at their political jokes, because they can even be quite funny--yet that friend knows I will NOT hate on him simply because he doesn't agree with me on politics. He recently threw out all his friends (it can take 15 people to run his layout) because they got "too conservative" on him during an operating session. I promised him I would NEVER do that, and we still get along, and I'm welcome in his home. When I'm at his home, I keep my mouth shut if I disagree, and I can have a good laugh.
I wish it could be that way with others.
Jack
