So I recently got a Bowser SD40-2 from one of their previous runs. I brought it to a friend's place to try it out on DCC since I don't currently have a DCC system. Everything seemed to be working fine for the most part, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the Drive Hold feature. When I turn it on, I can't turn it back off after. It also sometimes turned itself on when I tried to use other functions such as the Radiator fans or the Independent Brake. Whenever this would happen, instead of continuing as it was and allowing me to use the throttle knob to adjust the prime mover notch, it would simply go to Notch 8 and stay there. I was unable to get it to come back down without killing the power and restarting everything. On at least one occasion, I lost control of some of the functions (like the bell and the class lights for example), and at one point it also changed the bell and horn sounds it was using without any input from me. After I did a CV 8 reset, those went back to normal but the Drive Hold still doesn't work.
Has anyone here experienced anything like this before?

It might not have drive hold...that sounds like manual notching behavior to me...

It might not have drive hold...that sounds like manual notching behavior to me... According to the manual in the box it does have Drive Hold. It's on function 9. We did consider that it might be 'manually' notching, but since we were unable to get it to come down, and there were other gremlins showing themselves as well, we came to the conclusion that wasn't it.

Same/similar thing happened to me--couldn't get "it" to stop (without shutting off the system). So I decided I didn't need to press F9.
Oh, yeah. I am not at all sure it was a Bowser (if it was, it would have been an SD40-2F). I HAVE been playing a lot with my new ScaleTrains locos.

Next time you are playing with it, try this. Leave the engine sitting still and turn on F9. Does the prime mover rev up or not ? If it doesn't, if you advance the throttle, does it remain still, yet the prime mover revs up ?
If you can change the engine rpm with your throttle and the engine does not move, you have the full throttle feature engaged. If the prime mover goes straight to notch 8 and stays there, you activated manual notching. Turn F9 off and turn F10 on to bring it back down.

I spent quite a while playing with it, and what you descried is pretty much exactly what it was doing. When I would press F9, it would go straight up to Notch 8 and stay there. But I had no control over it. Changing the throttle simply caused the locomotive to move forward or back as it normally would. No affect on the sounds. And I wasn't able to change it using function keys either. There was even one occasion where it came on without me even pressing F9. I made several attempts to figure it out and in each case the only way I could get it back to normal was to kill the power and start everything over again. Same/similar thing happened to me--couldn't get "it" to stop (without shutting off the system). So I decided I didn't need to press F9. That may be how I end up dealing with it. Hopefully it won't give me any more trouble.

Then your decoder isn't set up for Full Throttle, but rather is configured for Manual Notching. Turning F9 on will increase the prime mover sound right up to notch 8 and stay there. You can turn F9 off at any time on the way up and it will hold at whatever notch you want on the way up. The ONLY way to bring it back down is to turn F9 OFF and turn F10 ON. F9 brings the prime mover UP and F10 brings it DOWN, BUT .... F10 will NOT bring the prime mover down if F9 is still ON.

If you have a friend that has a Lokprogrammer. maybe you can take the engine to them, and let them load a Full Throttle sound file onto it.
