All come with LED internal lighting and marker lights. DCC sound is an option. They teased SF caboose earlier in the year, not being announced now. Samples of all 4 (UP 2 paint schemes) on display.
Lots of prototype specific details.
$110 / $150 with sound
NOTE: eta is June 2020, but factory already has the order so this first release is a first come first served product.

According to what I heard Chris say, a whole lot more are coming. 2 to 1 odds they skip EJ&E. Even money, no undecs. They look really nice and it is about time us caboose era folks can finally have correct cabooses. Except for EJ&E of course. It would be great to see Athearn take on the entire International caboose line including the bay windows. Which would be great for NYC and PC modelers. MP and C&EI too. Brian

I'd like to see that also. I tried kit bashing a bay window from a WV Athearn and it seems like as far as RI cabeese they are the same in window placement, one has the bay windows one has the cupola.

Nice to see those coming. I could go for one of the UP cabooses as they were pooled on certain joint trains - might have been the Kaiser UP/D&RGW coal train.
My understanding is yes, plans are for lots more to be coming. Very cool.

I know why. This makes all the sense in the world. Just hear me out. You see, if they made the EJ&E version. Then they could make the C&EI version as well as the MoPac version. That means three more railroads from one caboose and that is why Athearn will not do the EJ&E version. Athearn would not come out and say it, but I nailed them on it. Now it is up to Athearn to prove me wrong! Brian

P&WV, cool! I might need to get one and slap a hamburger on it.
I'd be all over some N&W ones down the road!

...Seaboard... More importantly, just the start,of a line of ICC cabooses planned over time.
My only hope is they do enough research to get the correct roof on the waycars they produce.

And cue the bitching about the price. This is great news. I had planned to work on a new roof for the UP cabooses and get all the parts together to do a FW&D NE-13A caboose, but I don't have to worry about that anymore. I can't even get the parts from Shapeways at cost and a donor Atlas EV caboose for $110. I have no idea what the roof would have cost for the UP caboose. Personally, I have no interest in the gimmicky sound stuff, but if the lights are included in the non-sound version I wouldn't mind.

The website indicates that the lights are standard and come with a DCC controller as standard, but will work on DC.
While some of the sounds may seem gimmicky, the whistle/horn functions, handbrake tie down, etc. can likely be of great interest to those heavily into operations as attempting to operate as close to the real thing as possible.

Luckily no BN this time, but I can use a Q. Guess start dumping my atlas project cabooses now?
If I’m reading this right, they come with a decoder?

Like the Genesis GP38-2s, Athearn could do a run of these every month for the next 10 years and still likely not hit every variation and paint scheme. Very excited for these! Hopefully C&O/Chessie arrives somewhere down the road.

This is a Molo project and will be a really nice series of cars. It's high time that cabooses make an appearance...this has GOT to be the biggest announcement of the year.
Kudos to Athearn, Nick Molo, and the Athearn development team. I look forward to seeing Genesis Cabooses...in Missouri Pacific.
The Seaboard car is very close to the ex-KOG/MP International Cabooses that were built in 1952. The side windows are different on the KOG...but all else is the same.
If an undecorated car is offered...it would be easy to just make new sides with Styrene...or even make thin "skins" to put over the windows...
MoPac and MKT are really neat EV cars with their offset cupolas...It's a home run...
Haven't been this excited since the ExactRail quads...or the GP15-1's...

What's with lighted cabooses? The only light I ever seen used was the small light above the conductor's desk. We had to keep the caboose fairly dark so, we could keep a eye on the train and of course to protect ourselves from flying projectiles.
The noise heard in the caboose was from the train its self or worst the caboose or the car in front of the caboose had a flat wheel. You can bet the farm that bang, bang, bang from the flat wheel was nerve wracking.
I wouldn't mind a dim light over the conductor's desk and working marker lights though.
However.
If you're happy with a lighted caboose that's cool too.

I'm not too keen on the sample images that shows the cupola sticking out from the side of the carbody a little bit. That's a detail that should be fixed before production. On prototype images the side sheet of the cupola is directly riveted to the outside of the roof edge that overlaps the cabody side. athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG78518

But the cupola side IS a separate piece, and overlaps onto the body side. And it's certainly no where near a 1/4" thick (.003", for HO). This does need attention. Ed

Guys,Just for fun. I never heard the caboose whistle called a conductor's whistle. If anything it should be called the brakeman's whistle since they usually protected the reverse move from the platform.
The conductor?
On a nice sunny day he might ride the platform with the brakeman.. On miserable days he could be found at his desk doing "paper work" while sipping coffee..
That is one sweet looking caboose.. I think it surpasses any U.P brass caboose I've seen over the years.
I'll listen to you guys discussing the errors since I always learn something of value and good too know..

I consider myself heavily into operations, but the sounds are gimmicky. Too "tinplate" to me. I guess the whistle isn't too bad, but dumping the air is silly to me. The sound of tying a handbrake? Does that sound get played every time you set out a car? When tying down the rear portion of the train left on the main to pull cars from the team track? Are you going to follow the chart in ABTH 104.14 to make sure enough brakes are tied? Don't forget to do the set and release or the train master will pull you out of service! No thanks, I'll pass. Of course, I also don't bother lighting the UDEs on my Espee or Cotton Belt power, so what do I know?

This is Nick Molo tooling...and will be a really nice series of cars. Enough said. That's who I want tooling cabooses. This will free up a lot of time for me. Looks like I can shelve my N&W C31 project as well. I can't wait to get my hands on these. Can we order them yet?

I got an error trying to order through the Athearn website. Is that the only place you can preorder? I rarely order anything ahead of time, but I don't want to sit this one out.
