Subject: Sugar cube speaker in baffle box
Had a discussion with a fellow modeler this weekend about which way is best - with the cone face out or the cone facing into the baffle box. I have to admit I'm not sure I know if one way is better than the other.
What the consensus from those who know more about this than me.
TIA. Bob

From back in my hi-fi days, it doesn't matter. At least, for what we're doing.

I read an article regarding this online a while back .... unfortunately, I don't remember where now. They tested sugar cube speaker response through a graph showing frequency response over a wide range comparing speaker "cone" in and out.
In all cases, the graph showed better sound reproduction with the "cone" facing out. Now, while is WAS better, it wasn't hugely better .... I'm thinking the average person probably wouldn't even pick up the difference.
One of the biggest reason most use the "cone" in approach is that it is super simple to seal with the contact terminals on the outside. Flip it over for better response and now you have to deal with the terminals being in the way.
As point proof .... look inside any hand held device that utilizes these small speakers. They are all sealed in a carefully designed enclosure with the "cone" facing OUT. Can only assume the designers know what they are doing.

I mount them with the cone in as it simplifies the wiring considerably. Since I use junk speakers anyhow...what difference does it make? I worry about fat fingers messing up the little cones.
If I remember, I'll try the next one I do the other way and see, or rather hear, if I can tell a difference.
