We did this on another forum I belong to (Truck related) and it was kind of fun and interesting. The users posted up the origins of their selected forum name. Some were dedicated to one model or another, some hard to figure out, some creative, and some kind of boring, like mine! (It's my real first name and last initial)
Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to see why some members chose they name they use....

To hold myself accountable, I use my real name when I post online. Whenever I go to hit the "post" button, I ask myself, "Is this something I'd want my family, my employer, and every person I know to read?" If it isn't, I either edit or delete the post (and some of my best posts never saw the light of day; I can be pretty snarky). My mom was a corporate secretary, and she told me to assume that everything you write down is being collected by someone; don't write anything down you don't want everyone to see.
I include my roman numeral in my handle because my dad is also a model railroader, not that he posts online. However, we go to a bunch of train shows every year with the NHRHTA; if someone wants to yell at me I'd prefer they'd yell at the correct "Paul Cutler" over at the NH tables.

So my user name came from one the most recognizable locomotives on Norfolk Southern the C39-8. Took many attempts to do my first C39-8 model from the RPP C32-8 shell but it worked.
I do try and follow most of Paul stated on accountability, I think it is a courtesy to all forum members.
One other thing that all members I think should do is sign their posts which I do on all forums, lists and mailing stuff. Several lists I am on will not post your writings with out a signature.

My username is my favorite RR to model, although I'm also a big SP fan having grown up in northern California. I agree, with Paul and James on the accountability/name thing. Well said.

I started out with the picture of the engine I had as my background on the computer as it would be easy to remember. I have used it for all forums and groups that I belong to since it is easy to remember and I model the DT&I extensively. I also sign my name to all posts as it is required in a lot of my groups so I do it with the forums also.

My moniker here is based on a nearby railroad segment. It was adopted to keep model railroading comments separated from my professional career, back when I had a professional career. Politeness and mutual respect go a long way on line.

Internet posts cannot adequately convey tone. For example, there are times I'm trying to say something funny and it is completely misunderstood. I try to be careful what I say in online forums too, but people still get totally the wrong idea. I therefore prefer to remain anonymous, or at least as anonymous as possible. The last train show I attended there was nobody there (it was a Sunday and snowing), so at least I didn't have to worry about somebody yelling at me.
QCM 79 stands for Quebec Cartier Mining 79, the last of 3 Alco C-636's they owned. I like orange and Alcos…

My username is actually a contraction of the name of my favorite bass guitar (Gibson Thunderbird) and the year of my birth. I'm also a moderator on a very large forum dedicated just to bass players, it helps temper everything! I do try to sign my posts here but I often forget.

Here's one of my Gibson Thunderbirds, it's from 1976, worth about 4K.

Brakie because my Grandfather(a PRR engineer) called me that and of course I worked as a Brakeman for 9 1/2 years.

NCRC5315, because it was the first locomotive that I got to run as a student engineer.

My user name was created by my son, one night while I was at work. This was in 1993. It is my first name, last initial and the next numeral available, at the time. I couldn't believe there were five other Glenn's, with their last name beginning with G, ahead of me, at my ISP. Glenn is not close to common.

In the late 1980's I began do extensive research on the Great Northern's Willmar Division. I had a layout planned out and began construction in the late 1990's. Then life happened and the layout and research material ended up in a dumpster. Still have an interest but not like it was years ago. Still modeled in HO scale doing builds that caught my eye, but even that has ended. Instead I now build 1/25th scale model cars and big rigs.
My name is Jim Becker and I live in Morris, Illinois

I use the name of the freelance railroad that I model on this forum K9wrangler on others. Wrangler was my partner for my last 10 years chasing bad guys. Signature is the real deal. Especially more and more the curmudgeon part....

Thunderhawk was the name of the world's fastest freight train until the Super C came along.
Averaged over 60mph across the Trans Missouri Division of the Milwaukee Road on it's run from Tacoma to Chicago.
The westbound counterpart was called the XL Special.

Mine is the same since the first forum I joined in 1996. The registration process asked me to select a unique anonymous user ID. I looked around, and used the road name and number of the locomotive on my mouse pad.

This forum started in 2012 IIRC, so the anonymous thing must have been Atlas, who bailed and shut their forum down.

Um, no, there are reasons since then that I desire to remain as anonymous as possible.
Additionally since the government and others are most definitely tracking political posts on Facebook, I prefer to remain anonymous.
Also, there is a website that will publicly reveal every vote you have ever made, despite the illegality of revealing that. My sister just verified how other family members, including me, voted, and it was dead on correct. This should not be possible.
In Communist Russia the first people they executed were the engineers and anyone, any college professor, who disagreed with the government. If the wrong people get into power, that will be repeated here.

Interesting as in seeing what the initials and numbers represent, like a specific loco, or a railroad that you're fond of, nickname, etc, etc... Not looking to make anyone uncomfortable.

Also- as I noted on a post in the HO forum, I was bluedash2 (under both hosts) until email issues a couple years ago and I wasn’t able to use my old password and change it either so I created a new account. I notice mostly the same folks here still around as when Atlas actually hosted the forum for years. How many of you have been members here for both hosts?

Forums everywhere are dying; not just trains, but sports forums, gaming, music, politics, etc. All moving towards Facebook.

At one time I was active on the old Atlas forum, and I would prefer that past posts not affect the present, so...and yes, as I explained, my username represents an engine that I like.

Undoubtedly some have indeed passed on, but my personal belief, which may or may not be correct, is that far more left both this and the original Atlas forum because at times things became far too heated. It's easy to post a, perhaps flippant, opinion too hastily without fully realizing how it will offend people, and then it becomes an "infamous" post or topic that nobody ever forgets (even to the point it is brought up years later in other threads).
I now try to be far more careful what I say even editing after...maybe it goes with being over 50 now, too...
Some of the folks who have left were outstanding, very detailed modelers, who left for other greener pastures or because they just wanted more focus on modeling and less on "reviewing" rtr products.

Agreed. I was a member at the Atlas forum too. I saw some heated conversations, and tried to stay away from them. Here at the Atlas Rescue Forum, Donnell keeps things pretty well in control. (THANKS DONNELL!) Plus, the written word can often be misunderstood, such as when sarcasm is used. Some will get it, and others may not and become offended. It's difficult to show your intent sometimes.... As I've gotten older, in my mid 60's now, I hope to have become a little wiser. (The jury is still out on that one!) Still, I'm sure I've left others misunderstanding what point I might have been trying to get across. I try to reread my posts before entering, and I've caught myself with typo's, words left out, etc, etc.
