Has anyone ever come across any drawings or info on these cars? I found these pics today, and can't help but think one might make an interesting modeling subject. It would appear that some of them made it to at least the mid 80s and got yellow paint, so even you "modern" guys might be interested in them.
One more on the Fallen Flags website, both in colour and in B&W:

Looking at the link Ed posted for the Walthers hitch pack, did they re-tool these at some point? I don't recall there being that much detail in the base plates, the jack screw in particular. And TBird. I'm looking forward to seeing your outcome on these.

For those who are on Facebook, David Smith posted quite a few good shots in the Freight Car Enthusiast group recently. TBird1958, I've tagged you in the relevant posts. Anyone else: Just search for "TTX F30G" and they will show up.

Colin that last pic you posted is gold. I was wondering what that side channel looked like up close. Modeling that however is going to be a trick...... photo etch maybe?

I think some thin styrene strips will do it.

I was thinking more about part that appears to be square tubing with the notched slot cut in it. In HO this could probably be skipped but it would make for a fantastic model if it could be done.

I was looking at that too.......Take a close look at Walther's new G85, you'll see it. Not sure how to duplicate it yet. Thanks for the FB links Colin, they're much appreciated, I'm still chasing down some parts.

Now that you mention it, I think the old Athearn 85' pig flats have that feature as well. I'd feel a little better about cutting up one of those if I had to.

I think it’s some sort of chain tie down.

I think it’s some sort of chain tie down. I think it's more of an adjustable/positionable tie-down anchor. Admittedly, a picky-point. Chains, actually, aren't required; though they're likely very commonly involved. For modeling, the full-length rub rails are a challenge. Formed photoengravings would be great, but who's forming them? Ed

That's what I was thinking, it looks as tho that loop can be positioned in any of those notches along the side. My photo etch bending table can be taken apart and rotated 180 to have a solid straight edge that is 8" long. For a car this length I'd be ok. Trouble is getting things etched for a reasonable cost. But from the pic Colin posted it actually looks like the rub rails are three sections, so that could make it a bit easier.

As an FYI, it appears that Microscale set number 87-552 covers the number series for these cars.

Fantastic thread that unfortunately is kind of hidden in the sub forums. I agree. That's why I've learned to stop by and visit, every once in awhile. It's tough to decide which bell and which whistle goes where. The ARF is a GREAT forum. Totally love it!! Ed

That's why I monitor all new threads. Any threads which I think are interesting but don't have anything to contribute, I bookmark. That way on subsequent visits to ARF I'm notified of new posts in those threads too. And any threads I think are boring I "mark as read forever".

Generally I click on the Forum Title it goes to a page where I can see all the main forums sections and it's easy to see if there are any new posts. It's not everything but most. When in the HO section I can see the SPF and Project Archives, if there are any new posts there. That covers move if not all for me.

Either way,
I found 2 cars in my stash, and am going to order the handful of parts needed to build them. This is a nice weekend project.
Going to look into 3D printing those chain rails.

I was in Des Plaines Hobbies over the weekend and managed to find most of the other bits I needed for this. (and plenty of stuff I didn't need as well.) What do we think is a good match for the early TTX "brown"?

What did you decide on for the hitches and bridge plates, Evan? Regarding paint I used TCP Tuscan for the F60KH I built, it's lighter and more red that the dark brown Walthers uses on their recent TTX cars - G85 and F60.

What do we think is a good match for the early TTX "brown"? PRR freight car brown. Which, I recently learned, is not Tuscan. So they say. Since Tangent takes their paint colors seriously, I'd match their PRR colors. Ed

I have a couple of leftover parts sprues from the Walthers GSC flatcar kits, so I'll for sure be using the hitches from those. But I also picked up the DW bridge plate set and those look really nice also. I'll have to compare the plates to the photos and see what one is a better match.

I think the Walthers hitch which comes with both the GSC and the 75' flat car kits is the correct hitch. I'm also hoping to use the DW bridge plates. Flat cars can use whatever extra weight we can put on them :-)

I'll shoot a pic of what I found in my parts box, I'm pretty sure they came from the GSC flat.....

Very true, its too bad DW doesn't make the early hitch in a metal casting as well.

I am going to use the new Walthers Hitch Package for mine. They are a little more finer then the old one that came with the 75' flat.
The one thing I am kind of stuck on is the stirrups. The kit ones are chunky, but prototypical. They are flatbar, that lean out slightly. May just use some brass flat stock.
I am going to start working on making those chain rails next week.
