Was the Atlas yellow box RS11 made by Kato?

Yes. The Atlas Classic RS-11 is made in China, but the yellow box RS-11 was made in Japan by Kato.

I have a vague memory that Atlas's first HO RS-11's had a wheelbase that was shorter than later versions had. Am I imagining that?

I have a vague memory that Atlas's first HO RS-11's had a wheelbase that was shorter than later versions had. Am I imagining that? IIRC, the Kato RS-3 and RS-11 both shared the same chassis. So, the wheelbase on the RS-11 was slightly shorter - 6" on either end or 1' too short overall. But, the overall length of the body and walkway were correct.

I need to lobotomize 2-3 of them into an RSD-12........Good times ahead.

Seems like Kato made the drive and Atlas made the rest. They have molded on end grabs, too.
And they sold a version as an RSD-12, because it shared frames with the RS3 they put the same six axle trucks under as the RSD4/5 but I would imagine it's very incorrect as they haven't done them in a long time.

I really want to get the Atlas/ Kato version, but instead I opted for two of the undecorated Atlas Classic versions. This way I do not have to fiddle with cutting off the grabs and pilot details and replacing them with wire. If I want the superior Kato motor. I will simply replace the Atlas motor with a Kato. They are pretty much the same size I think. Different mounting points, but I think I can deal with that.
Now I will just need to scrounge up two more undecs to build a brace of RS-11's. My railroad was going to be all EMD. As much as I really like 4 axle EMD locomotives, I worked in my railroads history that it has all or at least the largest portion of its fleet with Alco due to its parent company scavanging all the good EMD stuff and shifting older ALCO power to it.

I have almost a dozen C420s and two classic RS11s and they all seem to run fine. I've run them together and with other Atlas engines.

I probably would have been happy with the Atlas RS-11's, except for the incredibly clunky handrails. They never fixed them. So I'm not happy.
Atlas COULD have fixed that. They didn't. Sorta like the C424/5 fuel tanks.
I just ordered a bunch of their 5503 double door boxcars. Again. But most of their stuff doesn't cut it. For me.

So... the Atlas yellow box RS11's truck spacing is too short, but it's correct on the Classics? Same frame as the RS32, I'd guess.

Don't know if it was fixed, seems like you look under one and where "Kato" was is blanked out on the parts though

I don't know how accurate they are but the Proto 1000 RS-11's that I have look good and run very smoothly. Sometimes hardened grease has to be cleaned out of the trucks though.

There was a problem with a 6” difference in the hood height compared to cab height which gave a noticeable off look to the locomotive. Rick Jesionowski

IIRC the Proto is also subject to the gear crack issue

I haven't seen any gear problems with the Proto RS-11's.

I certainly saw it in P1K F3s and it's the same truck, so

I certainly saw it in P1K F3s and it's the same truck, so One is a Blomberg with a 9' - 0" wheelbase; the other is an AAR with a 9' - 4" wheelbase. They seem rather different to me. Are the part numbers for the driving axles the same? If so, was the same plastic used to make all of these axles? Were there contaminants included in some of the castings? Were the metal axles all exactly the same diameter? Etc. Ed
