A bit more progress on my Cannon & Co S.P. B70-30, still have a fair bit of detail to add to the sides yet. The "B" end is coming along, part are from Exactrail, Moloco, Plano and Tichy. And something else that's completely different to work on while the glue dries, an Exactrail BFF 7440. A Seahawks win @ Buffalo would nice, perhaps the perfect cap to week! Mark Hills

I really love your way of doing the panel waves. I know you explained your technique before but I still enjoy seeing it.

Nothing finished for me this week as per usual. But I figured I'd share a work in progress and an amusing thought I had while deep in the tedium of masking. The amount of effort we put into the mundane amused me. Yet we need it to make sure nothing looks too out of place on our railroads. Without out it our layouts would look like Tyco toy catalogs. (Which is perfect fine, if that's what you like.) I prefer a bit more realism, its a fun challenge. Take the car I'm currently working on, absolutely un-impressive. If you were watching a train go by in 1968 you probably wouldn't have given it a second glance. Rock Island had nearly 200 of this specific car and it didn't even have a fancy paint scheme. And yet here I am a couple of hours deep into this model. (primer + 3 colors on a one piece body) Why? Because it'll fit better on my layout by not standing out. That and I simply get more enjoyment out of the modeling side of the hobby. Anyway, hopefully I'll have the finished product to show soon enough.

That is exactly what I enjoy about building a complete layout. Mixing the mundane with the occasional flash and flair. But mundane done well makes the layout.

Matt, I didn't buy any of the Kroger trailers but I notice the second one is plain after the Kroger logo. I don't recall Trainworx showing photos of that. Was only one number withe extra graphics?

Jim, I removed the rear logos with Scalecoat Easy Stripper and repainted the red stripe. I don't remember seeing Kroger Trailers with those logos just the Plain Jane ones. So I wanted one.

Wow, we're on the same wavelength right now. All those nondescript cars that blend in have been my focus lately. Just a little while ago the Solvaset evaporated and the clear coat dried on my latest creation, OKKT 3323. I started with an ExactRail Evans 4780 decorated for Erie Western. I stripped it, primed it, then mixed up a color that was at least in the same family as ExactRail's version of MKT green and sprayed the model. Today I applied Circus City decals to the model and sealed it with Krylon 1311.

Looks like it turned out really well. I like the Kroger scheme but as far as I can tell, they didn't run as far west as middle Colorado. OTOH, the City Market were regulars thru the Rockes.

I'm used to the grocery chains using their trailers for local delivery only. What kind of service were they in if they ended up on rail?

They must have been carrying perishables in these reefer trailers. I know for certain the City Market reefer trailers were regulars on D&RGW TOFC service across the system west of Denver serving City Market grocery stores. I shopped at one in Aspen in the early 80's. I've seen photo's of them being loaded on TOFC cars in Denver to head west over the Front Range. Alpha Beta had a meat packing plant my cousin Joe worked at in Pueblo CO and shipped meat by rail in trailers. I've seen photo's of the yellow Alpha Beta trailers out west as well. There is photographic evidence of that Bud trailers crossing the D&RGW system.

With the packing houses in Denver, my first thought was that Kroger, et al, would be sending trailers west for loading back to their DCs. I can't see them every being used for outbound delivery to a store...transit time too long, loads not properly blocked/braced.

I just gave the 1311 another shot (after already having the model previously dullcoated with an airbrush) and it still wants to have a reaction with the lettering. I made sure to shake it well past two minutes. Frustrating!

Nice pair of cars, Ryan. I just gave the 1311 another shot (after already having the model previously dullcoated with an airbrush) and it still wants to have a reaction with the lettering. I made sure to shake it well past two minutes. Frustrating! Thanks! I can't figure out what causes the crazing. I had it happen before when it was warm and somewhat humid. Then I've seen it come out fine when it was warm out. Yesterday it was in the 50s and neither humid nor dry and it came out fine. I didn't heat the can or shake it more than a minute. It does come out pretty fast and when I've had the crazing occur it was when I laid down a heavy coat. But it doesn't come out any faster than Tamiya TS-80 so the learning curve hasn't been too steep. When I go heavy with Tamiya clear I usually hold the model over a space heater to evaporate the lacquer quickly and that has saved me a few times. I have been pretty cautious with the Krylon 1311 so I've been able to avoid heavy coats the past several times I've used it.

Thanks, yeah there is snow on the ground here so temp and humidity shouldn't be a huge issue.
Is the tamiya better at having less reaction or is it all pretty much the same?

In my experience Tamiya is sensitive to high humidity, but I've never had crazing while using it. The high humidity caused a foggy finish, but it was some containers so I weathered the heck out of them. The other time I was less than pleased with Tamiya was when I sprayed flat over gloss aluminum and decals. The decal film was nearly invisible under a gloss finish but it jumped out when I sprayed the Tamiya flat. Not sure if I didn't let the gloss dry long enough or what (20 minutes maybe?). Another round of gloss and flat didn't fix it.

Thanks, I guess it's at best an educated crap shoot with these two. I'll proceed with caution!

A Lines West Products MILW two bay rebuilt hopper that George Toman did up for me. George replaced the grabs on this one with grabs he made from .008 wire and added some details. There was a second to be built as is from the kit but it was damaged. Very pleased how it came out. And yes, those stirrups are printed and come with the kit. Coupled to it is a Bennett All Door I was inspired to buy due to the thread here and a member giving me a heads up to a shop with this particular car. Concerning Krylon 1311. I've only had issues with it if I put on a fairly heavy coat. I mist it from a distance to where it dries within seconds and it looks very good.
