I took some photographs of another of my recently completed prodject. This time it is an Illinois Central Gulf 40' boxcar: I started out with a Branchline 40' boxcar with an 8' door. I added a full length sidesill to match the ICG car. Next I primed it with a very light gray and then painted it with Modelflex ICG orange. Finally I added Dan Kohlberg's very well done decals. (http://paducah.home.mindspring.com/). Other details that I added were Kato trucks, Plano running board brackets, A-Line stirrups, and a Kadee brakewheel. The decals are very complete so the only other decal that I had to add was an ACI label. I use Highball Graphics for these as I think they are better done than Microscales. I added some weathering to the car but I wanted it to look appropriate for my later Penn Central era. I did make sure to add some extra weathering to the roof as this area always had heavier dirt and grime than the rest of the car. These orange cars with their bold graphics really have that '70's look! -Tom

Handsome box car. I was never a fan of orange as a color, but it works for box cars - and D&RGW has plenty of orange box cars too!

I concur on the trucks! Altogether the car looks fantastic! This eventually will be moved to the archive along with many of your other projects!

Tom\ Nice job. That orange color really started to fade over the years, but looked really nice when were fairly new as you have modeled it. Larry

Tom: As usual a Super job on the car. They did not do that many 40' cars in the ICG scheme, but it looks very nice. Will look great behind your SD-40 and the P&LE PS-2. Adds a little color to the consist. Bill

Beautifully done ICG boxcar!
One of my all time favorite freight cars...the orange IC and ICG boxcars of the '70's.
Very convincingly done!
Thanks so much for sharing--
John

Another great-looking model, Tom! You should share a "family photo" of a bunch of your freight cars one of these days. I'd love to see them on a layout or module / diorama (if you don't have a layout at the moment).

Tom,
Beautiful work! I saw the prototypes back in the 70s. If you don't mind my asking, what products and techniques did you use for your weathering? I especially like the appearance of the trucks and wheel faces.

I especially like the appearance of the trucks and wheel faces. Thanks! Nothing really too difficult for the truck weathering. The first thing that I do is to mask the wheel treads with thin strips of masking tape. Next I spray the trucks (sideframes and wheels) with PollyScale Paint mix (50% Engine Black and 50% Tarnished Black). I thin the paint with about 15% distilled water. I then remove the wheels and then spray on some weathering on the sideframes. I first spray them with some very thin PollyScale Railraod Tie Brown (80% water/20% paint). I then spray the tops of the sideframes with a thin weathering spray of PollyScale red oxide. Finally I spray the area around the journals with ModelFlex Gloss Black. I very the weathering and sometimes add a dilute weathering spray of Sand.

It is very nice....but too nice for the ICG. ;D
I began riding the IC electric (now Metra Electric) out of the Ivanhoe (Riverdale neighborhood) station in 1978. There are four storage tracks and two mainline tracks for freight by the station. Trains would be stored on the tracks by the station waiting for either interchange with Chessie, Indiana Harbor Belt or waiting to get into Markham yard. The bulk of the IC, ICG and GM&O freight cars in the trains were in well used shape!. Motive power wasn't too spiffy either.
