I have been getting my artwork printed by Jim at Highball Graphics now for about two years. So far the service has been excellent and the quality top rate. no complaints at all. His turnaround time is very fast. On Sunday I completed my latest artwork project and submitted it to HBG. Today I received it in the mail. I had some reservations on how it would turn out. First with the C&EI decals I was very doubtful the small scale 1" lettering would show up well with the white letters and black outline. Although you cannot see it good in the photo here. It printed amazingly well. My second worry was the red and yellow in the Shell Chemical decals. I was certain there would be visible printing dots. Again, the print turned out beautifully! I am loving Highball Graphics custom decal service. It makes it possible for me to get some projects done that would otherwise not be possible. For the Shell Chemical decals I was able to locate the correct 1960's logo and put it on the sheet. The Athearn car does not have the correct style shell logo. My 1968 ORER shows Shell as having 28 cars numbered 5200 - 5228. I chose two numbers from that series for my cars. I have not seen anyone yet do the C&EI lettering with the black outline. These are for three shopped PS-1 boxcars with superior doors. For paint on these cars I mixed 50/50 True color paint C&EI boxcar red with caboose red. Color looks pretty much dead on for the photo in the C&EI color guide. Although in the photo, some of the artwork looks a little fuzzy. That is the camera. The artwork itself is very crisp.

I like his line, but I have been disappointed with them since he went to the new printer, especially the white. It is almost translucent.

Unfortunately I recently had to throw out a sheet of decals because they were so translucent. I hope they can have this issue resolved.

Is there anyway for him to double up on the white printing? I know Microscale and others will add a heavy base behind lighter colors.

The white is really pretty good in my opinion. In all of these, the white stands out pretty opaque looking. While the decal is still on the sheet, it does appear translucent. When applied though over a solid color, it is not very translucent. This is HBG white over black. This is HBG white over blue. This is HBG white over brown. This is HBG white over red.

Nice. How are the other colors? Do they have CMYK dots?

Nice. How are the other colors? Do they have CMYK dots? It depends on how small the artwork is. I have found from large swatches of color, the dots are not noticeable. For small areas and thin lines, they are and the color does not cover well. It was what I was concerned about with the Shell logo. I cannot not see any dots in it though.
