I tried to change the default horn on a Bowser DRS 6-6-1500 with a Lok Sound Select factory decoder. According to the documentation there are 16 options for the horn. The default is a value of 5. I tried changing to a different horn, numerous times, in both JMRI and POM with a Power Cab by changing the value in CV48. Neither method worked, the default horn stayed. Am I missing something? Admittedly I am new to both JMRI and programming in general. I was able to change the loco ID from 3 to the road number, using JMRI, with no issues, but could not change any of the sounds, the horn in particular.
Thanks in advance with any help or advice.
Tom

Cycling the power after you make the change should work. Just tip the locomotive to one side so it briefly loses power.

I know I easily changed the horn in a C430 with just an MRC basic setup, ages ago. Too long to remember the details but I have to think if I was able to, you should be too.

You might need to change an index CV before changing the horn type. Additionally, as noted, you need to cycle power to make the change take effect.

There are no index CVs that relate to CV 48 on LokSound Select decoders. Because of that, some values of CV 48 repeat the same horn option. Try starting at CV 48 = 0 and working up from there. You usually won't have a full 16 horn options, it will be more like 5 or 6. Starting again at CV 48 = 64 and counting up will give you the same slate of horn options but with a second bell option.

I was finally able to change the horn using the program track mode in my Power Cab. I did not try using the JMRI again. I’ll wait to use JMRI on my next project. I did use the JMRI to change the loco ID with no problem. The horn options listed in the quick start guide were different, at least in a different order, then printed. I ended up cycling through all sixteen to find the one I was looking for. I was not aware of the power cycling step. Is this step needed for decoders of all manufacturers or just fir ESU? Also, is power cycling needed after every change or as a final step after making all the changes?
Thanks again

Sometimes it is best to look thru the sound file on the ESU website as most time all the bell option CV's are listed. Look under the OEM project files.

When done with all of the changes, cycle power. This is true of all decoders.
