question what do you use to secure LED in ditch light housing? do you use permanent glue or something that dissolves in water? LEDs will go out but not for many years.

I always use a "canopy glue" that is water soluble or Microscale's Kristal Clear. I would say you could use almost any glue that dries clear. Would not recommend using a CA type glue.

i was thinking about canopy glue and looking up videos. dose it matter if you cover the whole led in the glue and slip it in the housing or will that make it led less bright?

I have not had any problems with the canopy glue covering the LED and having any affect on the brightness.

Here's the approach I use. If adding ditch lights to a model, in other words if you have the ditch light housings separate, I stick them face up on some double stick tape. I insert the LED into the housing, getting the position correct (pressing the wires onto the tape helps), then with a piece of brass wire (like 0.015/0.018) I add the smallest amount of Microscale Krystal Clear around the edge of the LED. Let dry and then install on the model. If you are say replacing Athearn bulbs in ditch light on an assembled model it's slightly more difficult. Since I most likely have the shell removed from the chassis, I hold the shell vertical in a wooden mount that I made. Then take the same approach as above to secure the LED in the housing.

When putting LEDs in headlight or ditch light housings I position the LED in the housing first and then fill the opening completely with canopy glue. There is no reduction in the brightness of the LED and it is held firmly in place. The wire connections to the LED are also re-enforced, much like some peoples' suggestions on applying clear nail polish to the solder connections.

Anybody know what type ditch lights these are? It appears to be 2 piece housings. Wonder what existing Athearn engines these are similar to. Bob

Bob There are actually 4 different LED items shown on Athearn's website: ATHG67143ATHG67144ATHG67145ATHG67146None of these include ditch light, headlight or beacon details. What is shown are various sizes of the black plastic clips to fasten the fine LED wires to the motherboard. There are also replacement motherboards available with proper resistors for the LEDs. It appears all these items are for replacement of the existing micro-bulbs in Genesis models where the detail parts are already in place.

Thanks David. That would explain the "black pieces". Where was Athearn years ago when I replaced all the bulbs in the SD70MAC! Bob

i will have to buy new www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG67140 for sd70ace that i'll be upgrading to LED lights on. it has ESU 21 pin loksound v4 oem decoder in it from previse locomotive that i upgraded with ESU Loksound v5 decoder. if your wondering how i got 21 loksound v4 decoder in the model i used the JST-21PNEM Adapter by soundtraxx. work good except there buzzing noise when you turn on and off lights.

well i got the led replacements and athearn gen dc 21 pin. the install was easy, front and rear led headlights fit right in. the LED ditch lights where easy they slip right in the housing. wiring lights to the athearn gen board little tricking but i got it figured out. i like these athearn leds.

I'm not sure I understand the various "sizes" (6.35mm, 4.75mm, 3.00mm). That can't be the length of the wires. Are there actually different sizes of the lED itself?

it the fiber optic that on the led. so i bought the 6.35mm witch is long for things like nose and rear lights housing for example sd70ace. but i put tiny heat shrink wrap around the exposed area inside the shell for no light bleed. i should have gotten the 3.00m type witch is i think the same side length as rice bulb. the 6.35mm is for over window headlight for sd40-2s etc... i think.

Does anybody know if Al Mayo, (aka Monster) is still selling his LED upgrade kits? Haven't seen any listings for quite a while. I know he moved last year so maybe doesn't have time. They were good kits for a great price. I bought a few. He may be along and give an update, hopefully. James in Texas
