Scale Trains announces the SDL39 at Virtual Springfield. A much desired engine!

Quite stunning. Was banking on the 45X a little more but man, now I need to come up with some more cash..

Scale Trains must be doing quite well to offer this engine. My wallet is very safe.

You know, I don't even remotely model this prototype, but these are just cool. I may have to pick up one of the "modern" units with ditch lights.

I cant use it, but really happy for the ones that can. I'm happy it wasn't a present day model, gives me an excuse to now pick up another ES44!

AWESOME!!! Don't NEED it, but plan to buy one because it's a great prototype locomotive.

I was close, thinking it was going be a six-axle "western" diesel, LOL.
I don't need one. But, I am sure tempted. I think I saw one in Nashville,TN one morning. I can't think of another short EMD hood unit that WC had even though I could not see its trucks.

Yeah, that's a tough break for Lines West.

Why did it have to be Museum quality? I was sure a 6 axle to run with the turbines. I actually was modeling the WC and would have loved some SD45’s and this guy. I since switched to 4 axles and freelance. The price range is not crazy either. Would I mind switching eras again into the 90’s? Boy, are they taking a chance that this one will sell enough!

Don't get me wrong I like MilwaukeeRoad and have several examples of their more unique locomotives but I don't think I will purchase one. Too much other stuff in the pipeline.

Wouldn’t these share components with a GP/SD 38/39/40?

Wouldn’t these share components with a GP/SD 38/39/40? Some, yes. But those same components are also shared with the SD45 they already offer, so nothing really gained in terms of tooling besides perhaps the rear half of the hood (screens, filters, etc.) that I can tell.

I remember a lot of comments on this very forum about wanting/needing an SDL39. I hope all those people step up, and we don’t hear crickets from them.

Wouldn’t these share components with a GP/SD 38/39/40? It's essentially a GP39 with EMD export trucks. So a GP39 would use much of the same tooling. They could offer ASAB (The Bay Line), C&O, Chessie System, CSXT, Kennecott Copper Rwy, Copper Basin Rwy, P&L, and some others.

The SDL39 is much shorter than a GP39. Not much would be useful for a GP39 model. My order for 3 Milwaukee's is in...I hope, the website seemed to be having issues. Hopefully that's a bunch of people ordering. Im glad to see these finally in plastic

WC versions showing sold-out already, per Scaletrains.com. Their website actually crashed for a while due to the sheer volume of people trying to order one!

I never expected to see the SDL mass produced and I still have my doubts on the GP. By the way, what exactly makes this a Museum Quality piece?

Man, I wish ScaleTrains would rethink how they did the numberboards. I think that is one of the biggest things I don't like about their engines.

I imagine many of us didn't see this coming; Since ScaleTrains is doing it, more will be sold.
Heck, even I am tempted but I can't afford to buy all the shiny things that come along. This should settle down all the SDL folks finally!

These pretty much lived in Wisconsin and other light-footed branch lines, and did not roam the Milwaukee system as road power. WC kept them on short leashes as well. Did they ever make it to Manitowoc? Never saw them mixed in the steady parade of 20-cylinder monsters to Schiller Park.
Interesting how this one would be a great candidate for that snarky "it's too regional" comment that we get as passenger train modelers. Somehow, though, that rule doesn't apply for freight trains.
Terrible for Thunderhawk. Hours of work saved for those still holding on to a Kaslo kit. Great news for the hobby.

It doesn't really fit what I model. However:) I have a thing for the WC, plus the features of the museum quality, means that there will be one on my layout, probably at a grain elevator.

10 actually built, I always wondered what the hype was... I think a lot of the hype and demand for the SDL39 is the "cute" factor. Like others, I don't have a "need" for one. But, I have been interested in them pretty much from when I first found out about them from plans in a MR till now andwould love to get one for my home layout. Talk about the perfect locomotive for a small shelf layout.
