Does anybody here use round nose pliers regularly? Something like this. Does it help in bending wire or are the radii still too large for most HO wire bending? It looks like Knipex comes in a 125, 140 and 160 mm length and a 130 with cutters. With each step from 125-160 the tip size goes from 2 to 2.5 to 3 mm. Any recs on brands? I don't mind buying Knipex as I hate cheap pliers, but if there's a good one out there that's not $25 I'll check it out.

I've bent a bit of wire with players and I can tell you it really doesn't matter how big the players are unless it is really thick wire. those look suitable for it.

I've got an assortment of such pliers. I prefer round/flatnose pliers, instead of full roundnose, though I DO have some roundnose. As far as the bending radii, I guess it "depends". Certainly, if you're bending "pipe", it should be at the proper radius. So I guess you might end up with a variety of sizes. This is the smallest I've found so far: www.riogrande.com/product/lindstrom-ex7450-flat-round-nose-pliers/111779The tip of mine is .026" diameter (.7mm). I DO worry about springing it with too-fat wire. So I'm careful. I would think you'd want a variety of sizes. True, they're tapered, and that should cover it. But I've got three different flat/round. If I want a sharp bend, I use flat nose. Ed

Ed,
For flat nose pliers are you using anything other than just a smooth-jaw flat nose? What you are referring to is a "wide" nose at the end and not one that comes to a point, correct?

Yes, just the smooth-jaw flat nose. Not "needle" nose. Mine has a jaw that is about 1/4" wide, that tapers to 1/8". The jaw is about 1 1/8" long. It's the onlly flat nose I've got*. I'll note that "high-end" pliers usualy are available with and without serrations in the jaws. For forming, smooth is better. Ed *I've suddenly developed an urge to buy another flat nose plier......

I occasionally use an old pair of Kadee trip pin pliers to curve wire when I need a larger radius, like for some brake piping arrangements, but usually I just use a set of needle nose pliers and my fingers to wrap wire around an appropriate sized drill bit.
