Wonderful news on the NE caboose; I figured it was only a matter of time for some company. SO MUCH potential here.

Life-like Proto 2000 came out with a generic NE version back in the '90s. You can always find them on Ebag. Good for Rapido to offer the classic NE caboose in road specific details, this will be a BIG hit for NE modelers from the '70s. I'll easily pre-order 5 or 6. I already have pre-orders in on (3) E-8's and a bunch of the 40 foot trailers, now this is really going to kick my wallet out the door.

The pre-Rapido NE cabooses have suffered from one-size fits all steps and end window arrangement. Glad this is coming out. Time to dump the brass.

NE cabooses have been done by:
- Varney, then Life-Like, who wore out the tooling and made a new one - MDC metal flat kit (50s) - Northeastern Scale (flat kit) - Athearn/MDC (90s retool based on their SP caboose, dimensions are wrong, too tall) - Life Like Proto 2000 (nice, but no detail variants) - Bachmann (relatively recent model) - Walthers (Proto 2000 model with some upgrades)
Plus brass releases over the years.
We must have been posting at the same time, this post wasn't up when I made mine. I'm fully onboard with these, to get the LV specific details done and installed (like those rock screens they used in place of FRA glazing) is worth the price. Going to be painful on the old wallet.
As I said there, there are so many more roads they can do in future runs. LV sold some to C&NW (at least one of which lasted into UP), Rock Island, Penn Central, and Delaware & Hudson; WM sold some of theirs off including to IC (who put wide vision cupolas on them), tons of shortlines had them secondhand also. Pittsburgh & West Virginia had some which went to Norfolk & Western. C&O had some, I forget where they came from. Etc., etc.

Sneaky teaser about a SD70M-2 project in the newsletter. As usual, I'll update the main post when the newsletter is posted online.

Good news on the northeastern style caboose. The old P2K caboose was OK for its time but time for a better model. Noticed that the LV caboose will have the correct 3-steps step. Hope the Penn Central cabooses that they picked up from the Lehigh Valley will be in the second release! www.rr-fallenflags.org/pc/pc18405s14.jpg

I see no mention of round end windows. Maybe a future release? Hopefully. The LV had plenty.

Is the NE caboose also known as a Magor steel caboose? Are they 34'2" over coupler face?

Posted this to the Year of the Caboose thread, but will put it here also - after there was a post asking about interiors I sent a message to Rapido and this is the response:

Well, this is going to cost me. I was just looking online at some of the older releases, glad I didn’t pull the trigger! I will be in for WM,RDG,CNJ and LV. Can see myself accumulating close to ten of these.
I’ll be using some of the funds set aside for the Erie/EL caboose models I’m jonesing for! Are you listening Tangent/DL? Lol

Sneaky teaser about a SD70M-2 project in the newsletter. Sorry to ruin the joke, but Rapido is not going to do an SD70M-2. I'd put money on it.

It looks like the E unit details shown would not be representative of mid 70s UP E. I wonder if a mid 70s UP E is planned?

I suspect Rapido, looking at the state of the market, are quite happy to let ScaleTrains and Athearn go head to head in the post-1990 market and instead focus on pre-1990 (and more so even pre-1980) which is for the most part currently being ignored by the other 2.

It looks like the E unit details shown would not be representative of mid 70s UP E. I wonder if a mid 70s UP E is planned? It appears the new revised UP E's are good for 1956 through 1958, inclusive. There is some questioning about the "O"s, but that's not totally settled. As far as "planned", I'd say "No". I think that kind of plan happens after they see the sales figures of these. It DOES seem a little odd that they chose an "era" that was only three years long, but if that happens to be YOUR era, you're set. I, too, hope to see some later versions. Meanwhile, I have to consider whether I want some of these for 1960, which would seem to require painting the ends grey--not exactly the most difficult task. Ed

They really are being quite aggressive at the moment - we know from their most recent Q&A that they have a CP freight car project ready to announce in the next several months - and consider this part of Matt Gentry's essay in this newsletter:
And for those wanting more US stuff, this comment from Matt (on the guess that he wasn't brought in, despite the MLW S13 comment, to do Canadian stuff):

There were only 8 UP E units after 1973: 1 E8A, 3 E9A and 4 E9B. I doubt they're planned, but they're not much changed from a very late 60's UP E, so maybe. If rather see a mid 60's E myself.

IIRC, it was the GM&O who bought and then converted some to extended cupola cabooses, which then ended up on the ICG. At least one is preserved down FL (as a faux L&N caboose). The Tennessee Central bought four from the WM, which ended up on the L&N. While one was wrecked and scrapped no far from where I now live, the other three survived into the 1980's with one now at the Southern Appalachian Railroad Museum. The C&O's cabooses also came from the Western Maryland. Somewhere I have a reprint of a Rails Northeast article that detailed where all the Western Maryland cabooses went.

What are the odds of a subsequent run of 1970s era correct E's? 112%?
.. okay you might have to build your own Crrandall Cabs .. but....

I am in on the reefers. Fit nicely in my 70s-era layout. Check another topic here on the ATSF reefers. Those are not good for 70s unless you don't mind running 50s lettered in the 70s. If the do another run later that fit 70 s better, I my bite.
