Are you thinking something along the lines of what's on the Bachmann old time steam locomotives? If so, one approach might be to find a "junker" copy of the shell and pull the details from it.
Failing that, I usually look around for items that look similar to what I want for detail parts and then get creative...

Yes I was, I looked at Bachmann parts on their website but I was hoping to find a source that might be cheaper than buying the whole shell from Bachmann. I'm kit bashing an MDC 2-6-0 into a 4-6-0 1850's Hayes B & O Camel back and I'm done to the stack and 1 steam dome, the rest is done.
