On the work bench this morning, a Tangent Greenville that's undergoing a little weathering. So far, a coat of White acrylic, a wash of Umber oil and some brown chalks. An easy side project as well, just adding some Moloco Evans cushioned draft gear to this Atlas 52' Blue Island RBL. Have a great Sunday! Mark Hills Some X79 fun

This week, I'm working on a long sought after project and a rarity in the Soo Line boxcar fleet, #19369. Of the ~2,300 "North Fond du Lac" cars rostered by the Soo, this was the only car to receive an all red paint scheme. It was painted in 1986 at the same time shop forces were repainting the ubiquitous white caboose fleet in a chocolate brown scheme. One wonders why only a single car was painted this way, when so many at that time could have used a fresh coat of paint. The Wisconsin Central took care of that just a few years later when it a acquired a large percentage of the fleet when it was created. This model is based on the often maligned Fox Valley model with a Branchline roof. In order to allow it to fit the (too short) Fox Valley body, the inner rib of the roof was trimmed and base filed flat. I lightly sanded the ends to shorten them up a fraction without impacting the rivets. Not perfect, but it will have to do. Paint is Tru-color "Soo Line Red" and decals are by Microscale. While I haven't tackled the large "SOO LINE" lettering yet, I can see that they will end up laying a bit short on the panels which makes me really respect the job Dan Kohlberg has done to account for the ribs when designing his decals. Turning a corner on the GP40P project. After some missteps, the nose stripes are done. Turns out that 6" wide did the trick. No two prototype units are the same, having been masked by hand in a hurry. Well along with decaling. Not sure what else I want to do to the patches. they really are a horrific color and very visible in the prototype photos, but need a little weathering. Trying to decide between using a little solvent or using fine sandpaper. Finding sufficient decals is proving an extreme chore, and I've pulled out a dozen or so different sheets to harvest the bits.

Recently finished car! Arrohead Models PRR H39 Hopper Car kit, The PRR settled on this car as the replacement for the H21 Hopper car after experimenting with the H35 and H36 Classes. Over 16,000 of these cars were built to haul coal on the PRR. Car was painted with Scalecoat II PRR Freight Car Red and lettered with a couple of Herald king decal sets for the proper lettering for a repainted car. All the H39;s were painted black, but some shop painted this car in red, and this car down to the car number replicates the picture in Teichmoller's book on PRR hoppers. Rapido FP7s and F7B shown on the Strongsville, OH Club Layout. Thanks for looking, Rick Jesionowski

So finally got a chance to take some photos today. Spent last week trackside for photos. First off is the finished B&LE boxcar from several weeks ago: Next is a project I challenged myself to do. With no correct NS GP59 on the market but brass which I can not find, I scratch built this one. Base model is a P2K GP60 using only the chassis and walkway. Cab and nose are 3D prints designed by Fr8kar as is the dynamic brake section. Hood side are scratch built with Cannon & Co doors and parts. DB fan is Cannon and radiator fans are Detail Associates. Front plow as scratch built by Tony Sissons to match NS 4608/EMDX 10. Still some work to do but it is getting close now. Great work this week!

Was there any more news out of the WGH Show other than the Atlas MP36?

I like intermodal trains of the 80s which can mean lots of four axle power on the head end. It's not really practical to have all the locomotives be powered and sound equipped so I've returned to the ways of the 80s and started building dummies. While I was browsing the Atlas website for some parts I came upon some decorated shells for sale, so I grabbed a few. Here's the first of the dummies which is mounted on a 3D printed frame with Proto2000 trucks. I designed the frame to accept a Kato motor with flywheels, so I might power this thing at a later date but for now it's a dummy. I've filled the interior of the shell with self-adhesive tire weights which brought the weight up to 12 ounces. Once I removed the gears from the trucks it became very free rolling.

This week, I'm working on a long sought after project and a rarity in the Soo Line boxcar fleet, #19369....This model is based on the often maligned Fox Valley model with a Branchline roof. These do clean up nicely. I enjoyed the last 3 that I built enough to pick up 3 more. But I'm finding the FVM block SOO paint scheme hardly matches anything in the fleet. It certainly doesn't help that Fond du Lac seemed to change some little thing every time the shop painted another car. FWIW, FVM had a second run with a much-improved roof profile. And for the cars that don't include it, I found Exactrail's roof works quite well. Unfortunately, all of them need to have the trucks swapped out with Moloco's 70t ASF truck, plus scale-head Kadee couplers. When you add the large SOO lettering, *don't* try to settle the decals over the ribs. Stretch them out, and let the Micro Sol do the work--this will keep the logo proportions correct.

Ryan, nice model. Question, I purchased a decorated body shell from Atlas a year or so ago and at that time they shipped without the front and read handrails. Did you receive front nd rear handrails with this body shell? Thanks. Bob

I had some extra end rails from other projects so I painted them to match, but I didn't have any extra drop steps. I don't have enough extra end handrails to finish the other shells I bought but I have a bunch of Utah Pacific stanchions and wire.

Great job, I Love the red Soo Line 7 post boxcar. I wonder if we will ever see a high quality one someday. Preferably a year or two away my wallet has already claimed uncle & is threatening to throw itself off a high bridge over water next time. I tried explaining its not my fault all the mfg's conspired against me this year. I mean really SDL39's, Tank Trains in Billboard lettering, Barrel Ore cars. If Scale Trains or Athearn Genesis announce a GP60/GP60M/GP60B and or B40-8/B40-8W or GP35 I throw in the towel.
That GP59 is starting to look incredible.
The LV cabs are very cool. When I first started modeling around 8 years old even though Athearn were affordable I would go to shows with dad & pickup cabooses to detail & paint. At one time I had over 100 cabooses with about 5 engines but all different roads.

Great job, I Love the red Soo Line 7 post boxcar. I wonder if we will ever see a high quality one someday. Kristo From my experience, the FVM car really is a good model. I don't think you need to wait for a new version at all. They all need trucks and couplers swapped, and later runs don't need a new roof. This is factory paint, ExactRail roof, Plano cut lever brackets, and Moloco trucks. The brown one in front is also factory paint but with the revised factory roof.

I bought one of the FMV white SOO with read door like the middle car in the 2nd photo; it was probably 2016. I am not sure if it is the run with the improved roof. I also got one of the Moloco SOO as well.

Beautiful bridge. How long is that monster ? Is it completely scratchbuilt or a kit bash ?

It's a model of a former NYC bridge It's completely scratch built from styrene sheet and strip plus some styrene T bar and Gold medal models X bracing for the girders some of the lacing is cut from Central Valley models girders the span is 231' just shy of 32" in HO the ht is 6 3/8 in ho. I have to add more lacing bars and the trough floor yet which will require so.e etching. I'll be scratchbuilding some more bridges soon.
