This is the five types of coal hoppers that the Cairo Port Terminal & Chicago use to haul coal from the southern Illinois coal fields to their destination north and south. To build a fleet of these is going to be a daunting task. I figure it is possible and would take between two to three years of moderate attention to build a 100 to 150 car train.
TYPE #1 - This is an Accurail 50 ton wood side coal hopper. It rides on Tahoe Model Works 50 ton trucks and has Kadee scale head couplers installed. In the 1800's and early 1900's, wood side cars ruled the rails and the Cairo Port Terminal & Chicago Railway had a good many of this type of coal hopper. Moving into the modern era of the early to mid 1960's a lot of these cars were scrapped and replaced with all steel constructed cars. Only a few of the wood side remain in service and only because of a coal hopper shortage.
Type #2 - This is an Accurail 55 ton USRA coal hopper. It rides on Tahoe Model Works 50 ton trucks and uses Kadee scale head couplers. This car became the standard coal hopper for the CPT&C when it was decided that the wood side hopper fleet needed to be replaced.
Type #3 - This is an Accurail 50 ton offset side hopper. It rides on Kadee 50 ton National Type B-1 trucks and has Kadee scale head couplers installed. This was the second type of coal hopper the CPT&C standardized on before the 70 ton cars were purchased.
Type #4 - This is an Accurail 70 ton offset side hopper. It rides on Kato 70 ton solid bearing trucks and has Kadee scale head couplers installed. The CPT&C acquired a good number of these cars when the 50 /55 ton cars were just not enough to handle the demand.
Type #5. This is the Bowser 14 panel 70 ton coal hopper. It rides on Kato 70 ton roller bearing trucks and has Kadee scale head couplers installed. It is the newest and last type of coal hopper the Cairo Port Terminal & Chicago Railway acquired.
