This week I've been working on modifying an Olympia/Gem PRR F3c to better represent one of Cumberland Valley's. A decent amount of work on the front end, probably as much as the entire rest of the locomotive! The pilot, coupler, lead truck bearing (why does it seem so many manufacturers always forget these?) and under-cab steps (not shown) are printed.

I'm slowly bringing this GP40 along, new nose and cab as well as a new fuel tank and adding details to the underframe..... Boeing Eployees held their swap meet yesterday for the first time in 2 years, had a really good day, sold $700.00 worth of older, not relevant models and picked up these two Overland Models caboose' for $250.00.

Last week I posted a photo of my NAPA "tilt up" building. So I decided to add some "action" to it. Here's the "before" and a link to "after".(couldn't figure out how to add video in stream) Bob

Today was my local club’s open house. So I didn’t work on anything, just made some videos of what I ran.

My monday addition. Been busy doing small bits of work on a few things lately, so here are some subpar shots being as it's not ideal for outdoor clicks today. Previously posted Trailer Train flat, with this being the opposite side, and an added SBD reweigh. Still need to put the new weights on. Another car I've been working on for a few years. I finally lowered the high handbrake, crossover platforms (Plano), added some cut levers (Tangent with Plano brackets), and Tangent hoses. Also added "70" stencils to the trucks, per CSX practice. Pretty much done, needs a little light overspray on the ends. Here is some era-specific decals applied to the Scaletrains coil car. Modeling the summer of 1999, one must have remarked Conrail equipment. In progress G43 from the first run. A light wash of MIG tracks wash, then some oil brushers for the ribbed gon sides collecting grime. NYC decal is too small for the prototype, so nevermind that. New ones will be on the way.. The other side, original reporting marks intact for now. The small things that don't all show up here in contrasty light, the touches of white on the bleed rods, retainer, pin lifters, and handbrake chain. Those modern touches, along with truck lettering, really bring depth to the table on all freight cars. Adjusting data and COTS is another one of my favorite things to do to achieve a lot of progress in a small amount of time.

A day late, but finally finished these up over the last few months, and they've been several years in the making. SD40-2 worship is not really my thing but I did want to build models of these two particular units for sentimental reasons- I ran the 8020 for most of the summer of 2011- right before it was renumbered into the "switch engine" number series, and I was on a work train with the 8130 back in the summer of 2007 for a few weeks. Scale Trains Operator series unit detailed out- Athearn RTR detailed- Brad

Always appreciate some green Deuces in the era I most remember. Love the wear on the side edges of the nose, I can almost feel the glossy smooth surface..

Hi, Last weekend helped a friend with a small exhibition layout at Houten Digital. The layout was a specific demostration of how to run trains automatic using iTrain. 1 - Houten Digital by G.Damen, on Flickr
At the show I also bought a couple of Walthers Mainline 16,000 Gal Funnel Flow tank cars. First thing I noticed they felt quite light. A quick weighing at home revealed that indeed they were grossly under weighted. I had to add about 45 grams to each car. The lead strip is glued in using construction adhesive which is left to dry a day.
Adding weight to a walthers 16000 gallon tankcar by G.Damen, on Flickr With this addition the cars are at their NMRA weight of 110 grams. The need to almost doubling the weight leaves one wondering why Walthers didn’t added more weight to these cars.

Brad - Love the BN SD's!!! I'm a huge fan of Cascade Green units, particularly the SD40-2's. I have a few of them around me that show up from time to time. They are, unfortunately, getting more rare as units are shopped and upgraded....then come out in shiny orange and black. Looks sharp for sure, but the old BN units have so much character.
You did a fantastic job on these two units. The way you do your dust and grime is extremely convincing. Nice work with the color change on the green as well. The whole package just looks right.
I have another ex-BN unit I need to do. But haven't decided if I'm going to use a ScaleTrains model (hard to find) or an Athearn RTR. Both will need work, even if I get a Rivet Counter model. Your models have given me some much needed motivation to start gathering supplies for mine.

Walthers and Athearn RTR/Genesis Tankcars are ALL SEVERELY UNDERWEIGHT. I have been going back and adding weight to all of mine.
Depends. I have other cars which are a lot more closer to their recommanded (minimal) weight. I use a bandwith of about 5-10%. I also don't mind a small difference in weight if the car is long enough. Above 60 ft a bit to less weight becomes (for mine use cases) less important. It are the short cars, like these tank cars where being more then 10% to lite tends to hamper operations.
With almost double their initial weight they behave a lot beter (less springy) and even the rolling sound is more prototypical
Also nicely done tank cars. I like the mild weathering. In mine case being black a couple of them will get a white down (that light grey powdery look).

Thanks for the positive comments, everyone!
Kpack,
I want to do at least one more BNSF green SD40-2s, the 7826, a whiteface unit. I find the green difficult to match, there is so much variation with the amount of yellow in some of the shades on these units, so after I thought I came close with the first unit, 8020, I knew I’d better continue on to the 8130 while I still had some idea how to do it. I used a light amount of powders on the trucks and tanks, but the rest is all acrylics, as usual. Back in the day, I bought quite a few Athearn RTR SD40-2s, I have several more ex Santa Fe units I’d like to get to eventually….

Timken bearings look good on that thing. Was terrified to do it lol But now that I did it and it was easy, lots of conversions that need roller bearings on trucks that need them.
