1st 2014-run Rapido F40PH-2 was recently improved after sitting mint in box for past 7 years. Couplers were replaced with Kadee whisker semi-scale head, trip pins removed, knuckles painted rust, uncoupling levers and wiper angles adjusted, cab interior seats repainted to black, rerail frogs added, relocate bell, paint fuel filler gauges red and paint rear battery plug yellow. Plus of course renumbered to VIA 6457 which was built in late 1989 and was the unit that lead the very last eastbound Canadian across the country from January 14-17, 1990. 6457 would later be leased to CP Rail for freight service on the Winchester and other eastern subdivisions. It was rebuilt in 2009 and is still in VIA service today.

Nice looking F40 indeed. Continuing with my procurement of details and refining the small stuff. Getting close to the end of what will be great news for all Wisconsin Central fans.

Only a little progress on my GP40 project this week, not worth pics, we're working on finishing the basement of the house so not as much time for trains.... Some oldies...... Cheers, Mark Hills Here's a CB&Q XM4 '50 box, scratch built sides and underframe with Branchline ends and roof. Chevies on a Rock Island rack. A fave MoPac car.

First I had a chance to run mine only N-scale engine a Southern RS-11 with some hoppers on Fremo N-scale modules from some friends of mine at the local club. Running a N-scale Alco on N-scale Fremo modul by G.Damen, on Flickr Today I worked on two additional Walthers 160000 gallon tankcars to add the airline across the bottom of the car. This time I managed to get them free standing without fouling the movement of the trucks. Enhancing tankcars - second batch by G.Damen, on Flickr
Next stap is painting the wires.

Are those commercially available stencil fonts, or is that artwork of your own creation? The 62 15 gears is a mixture of custom and available, all the smaller stuff is hand traced from photographs. Most of the sheet is custom wordmarks, from the WC logo to the rear numbers over the headlight. The entire "WISCONSIN CENTRAL" on the long hood is hand drawn as well, and will be the best rendition of the hood font ever done. There are a lot of small details that the regular helvetica font doesn't match, I am excited to bring these to market in not only decal format but perhaps some factory painted locomotives soon.

Well, the kitbashing part of turning my four undecorated ExactRail FMC 5327 boxcars into Santa Fe Bx-182/189/196 food service boxcars is complete. Next is paint and decals. Originally I planned on printing new flat x-panel roofs for these cars, but since I was going to end up with extra peaked roofs anyway I decided to try scoring the back side of the roof and bending the roof flat. It worked so I filled the score line with some strip styrene and sanded the roof to fit the opening after sanding down the peaked carbody ends. After that I cut the draft gear off each car and replaced it with Moloco FMC cushion draft gear. Pretty easy kitbash. It's not a perfect model of the prototype, but it's close enough for me.

Not much done this week. Drew up and printed a holder for the plastruct bottles. Long on my want list, I was able to add a Federal Commander beacon to my collection.

Have you figured out a way to get them to stop evaporating before I can even use the glue? It got so bad I gave up on the product altogether.

The stencil font looks fantastic. I've been trying to find something to match a few different styles of stencil font used by UTLX during the 70s and 80s but nothing is an exact match. Maybe tracing the letters like this is the best approach. Whatever you're doing seems to be working great!

It became apparent to me that the level of fidelity many enjoy is missing in crucial areas. The WC stuff is the pet project that made me jump into Adobe with both feet, but I've since also created many patch decals and numerals in the process. I don't realistically aspire to be a 95% modeler, but certain authentic details are huge, and lettering/data is a point I am excited to capitalize on. Depending on how long I want to keep paying for this subscription, I may make more inroads into wider subject matter.

For those having problems with Tenax or Plastruct solvents evaporating: try Tamiya Extra Thin "Quick Setting". Works just as well as the other products, IMHO. Does also evaporate fast if you leave the lid off... but it closes tight.

Also, the brush attached to the lid actually works.

I will second the Tamiya extra thin cement. I had the problem with Tenax and Plastruct evaporating. I tried the Tamiya after watching several armor model builders on YouTube. I happened across an even hotter liquid cement while placing an order with Burbank house of hobbies for Tamiya accent color solutions. The Mr hobby line has what they call Mr. Cement and it is hotter than the Tamiya and actually works on the hard to glue Kato plastic. I used it to glue a long hood to the walkway of a Kato SD40-2. See here: www.mr-hobby.com/en/product2/category_12/222.htmlI use the MC-124. I tested this also on some Union Station Cars sides and while it is hot, it did not damage the car sides which are .020 styrene. Also the brush in the Tamiya and Mr Cement both work well! Forgot to add that a lot of great work again this week.

But will it affix rubber air hoses to plastic?

I just use CA (5K Flexy from TWS) for it. Melts those glues also the rubber? Otherwise I don't see how it could glue to plastics.

Yup, that is the one I use. I also have the slow one. When it sets it gets really though and not brittle like normal CA.

I am hard-pressed to find a better general-use glue than Weldbond. Dries clear, doesn't leave fog, comes in a large container and lasts years. I only use ACC when I need something to dry quickly and no windows are involved. YMMV.
