I bought several used #56 Control Boxes. Most of them don’t seem to work. Is that unusual?

If I remember correctly, once you slide the button to the side, you also have to push on it for it to make contact. Try it again...

Yes, you have to push the button once it's set for the route you want. The connection must be very momentary (less than a second) so you don't burn out the coils in the switch motor.
And yes, it is unusual for these to fail.
