VIA 6448 was built by GMD London as part of the 3rd and final order of F40PH-2Ds (GPA-30c 6430-58) between April and July 1989. VIA had also just built several new maintenance centers in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver and was still running daily dome/diner/sleeper car passenger service on CP Rail between Montreal and Vancouver. Three months later on October 4, federal government transport minister Benoit Bouchard shocked our nation when he announced devastating cuts to the VIA system which cost 2700 employees their jobs and resulted in a 50% service cut. The most well-known victim was the world-famous "Canadian" streamliner which ran on Canadian Pacific tracks through the most heavily populated southern part of the west. Nationwide protests, heavy media attention and court challenges changed nothing and on January 15, 1990 most of the CP line across the west was stripped of all passenger trains for the first time in 104 years. VIA's F40s, half of them brand new at the time, along with the service cuts allowed for dozens of tired first generation passenger locomotives to be retired and scrapped or sold. After a brief stint in the dying days of western passenger service on CP tracks, 6448 spent most of its time on the CN line across the west in the 1990s on the Super Continental train that VIA now calls the "Canadian". Along with 12 sisters, this locomotive later ended up back on CP Rail in 1994-95, now in lease service across CP's eastern freight-only corridor which was desperately short of power at the time. This exhaustively-researched and designed Rapido RTR model has been improved with additional details and refinements plus renumbered and is well-suited to replicate any of these historic operations in HO scale. More information and plenty of photos of VIA's final order of GPA-30c F40PH-2Ds are available in the latest issue of Diesel Era (Q1 22) magazine.

Lots of progress made on my RDG GHy this week. One of four cars I'm building, but the only one of these.

Very nice scratchbuilding of the Reading gondola. We're there drawings available for this car? Here is my gondola and aluminum scrap load: It was built a while ago from a Rail Yard Models kit. The load was made from silver mylar glitter. I built a removable styrene base that I glued the mylar down. I then gave it a slighty dull finish and then and a black/rust wash to.

Love your gon Tom, and thank you! I worked from the basic dimensions on RDG's shop drawing and WM's similar cars. For the exact shape of the fishbelly and the rib placement I took dimensions from some side view photos. Everything seemed to work out to logical dimensions (i.e. feet, half feet, etc.) so I'm satisfied.

This week is off to a strong start. I was asked to post some layout drawings last week, so here they are. Staging Main level Second level Third level There's a 10" separation between the staging yard and main level while everything else has a 22" separation. Enjoy, -Dave

I'm busy upgrading the landscape of mine modules. A lot of them are more than 10 years old and lot of things have improved during that time as have my skills ;-) Another reason to upgrade them is that most of them are needed in a setup at the first Dutch US Model Convention in May this year. First I got myself a new static grass tool, a Greenkeeper 35kV with interchangeable static grass containers. The original Noch Grassmaster I had hasn't enough power (8kV) to reliably handle gras longer than 6 mm. Upgrading modules with static grass by G.Damen, on Flickr Next step is to strip the module from all larger obstacles like trees and buildings: Upgrading modules with static grass by G.Damen, on Flickr After adding the gras mix (a mix from 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm fibres) the module looks a lot better (outside photo): Upgrading modules with static grass by G.Damen, on Flickr The final result with all the trees back. The white patches is the glue (a mix of water and primer) ready to receive the gras fibres: Upgrading modules with static grass by G.Damen, on Flickr

The firm at 830 Varick Street, Utica, NY that makes Utica Club beer is now called Saranac Brewery. It also makes a Saranac "ginger beer" that I like better than any other ginger ale I've ever tried. Not too sweet, and not excessively gingery. The last time I visited the Adirondack Welcome Center on the Northway it was on sale there. Dan, do you plan to decorate a reefer for that fine soft drink?

You know, those aren’t a bad option. There were a couple of combine toolings that Ertl did in the 80’s and 90’s that they sold along their 1/64 scale products, but the combines were sized smaller - around 1/80 scale. In addition to the IH ones there, there was the Deere 8820 Titan and Titan II that were about that size that were pretty respectable looking. Both should be a lot cheaper than the 1/87 models. My only gripes with those and Ertl in general, are the terrible looking wheels.

I don't have any plans for that one at this time. I am currently concentrating on older, historic breweries. Dan
