I got a little work done this week. First up is an Athearn PS 5344 kit, I know they are a foot too wide, but Exactrail seems to not want to do any more PS 5344 kits any more. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Reefer Orange, Silver and Black Paints then lettered with Highball Graphics decals. Cars were in general service on the D&H. Next, a Walther's 89' Intermodal Flat Car kit, car was painted with Scalecoat II Hunter Green and lettered with a couple of sets of Herald King Decals. The DT&I picked up several hundred flat cars for their Rail Blazer service from Detroit to Cincinnati, All these cars came from previous owners so all the car data was left in place and the old railroad's identification was painted out and DTIXXXXX number was painted on. These cars came from the Texas Mexican railroad of which the DT&I got 12 cars. A pair of Athearn DT&I GP40-2's with an auto parts train heading for Delta, OH to interchange with the N&W for the Ford FAST to the west coast. Thanks for looking, Rick Jesionowski

You two have trucks and cars covered, so here is an engine. Got my fans in on the CSXT 8436. Fuel tank swap, truck detail, and pilot detail is up next.

I picked up this poor PFM WM H9 this week, which someone thought it was a good idea to turn into an "S160." Most of it's still there though, and it shouldn't be awful to put it right again. I never quite liked those PFM domes anyway, to me they're too tall.

Some quick shots from the car hood of TFM 1432- To say this makes an Athearn SD40-2 look good is an understatement. Nailed! I loved me some two tone, and if I had my way I'd model mid-late 90's KCS so I could sprinkle these around. Killer.

Dan, did Leinenkugel's have reefers decorated like your model, or did you design the artwork? It certainly is attractive. I have enjoyed at least one brew made by Leinenkugel's, possibly including some fruit juice, which I probably bought in New Hampshire.

Thanks! This ended up being a much more involved project than I originally thought. The original two tone NDM blue scheme that the models come in actually differs from the later FNM scheme that all of these seem to have been repainted into - wider light blue band on the long hood, and more light blue nose and cab front so this had to be fixed, plus, it also required piecing together decals from like four different Microscale sets……

I know of the two competing releases, Scaletrains did the version where the cab face stripe was omitted, where as Athearn did the continuous stripe. Did you repaint the blues or color fade them?

I have enjoyed at least one brew made by Leinenkugel's, possibly including some fruit juice, which I probably bought in New Hampshire. All of the research I have done on the beer reefers I have, (over 50 now) I have only found evidence of two of them having prototypes, Genesee beer and Miller. The Miller I have is not based on the prototype as I can not find good enough Photos to re-create the artwork from. The Genesee is as accurate as I can possibly make it. All of the other cars I have done including the Leinenkugel's are merely fantasy cars that I have created the artwork for. Dan

Loaded sugarbeets on my Southern Pacific modules...unfortunately I had to leave these corner modules behind when I moved to another country... So this is all that's left...memories.

Finally got warm enough again for me to apply the final finish before weathering on this N&W hopper. Started as a Tangent undecorated 4740 kit, like one of the first run. Painted with Scalecoat II UP hopper gray/MOW gray mix. Decals from Dan Kolhberg. Great work this week everyone!

I have a 4750 to build yet for my N&W fleet. I am waiting on the Southern 4750's to be run again as I missed the first round. Also waiting on Exactrail to do the Big John with through hatches.

I'm interested to see how that turns out, I used to see lots of NS/SOU/NW hoppers around here hauling phosphate up from North Carolina. These days it's all leased cars, are those other cars still around? I seem to remember the NW 4750s being very similar to, but not quite the same as P-S 4750s. I think the roof was different. Did they build those cars 'in house'?

Did they build those cars 'in house'? NW had several classes of 4750's. The HC71's (NW177001-178500) were Pullman supplied kit to the Roanoke shops. They were built in 1973-1974 & 1979-1980, There were three different hole patterns on the jacking pads and there were three different types of gravity discharge outlets used. Roanoke also built Class HC71A (NW185000-185074) in 1973, these cars had 6 additional round hatch opening built into the trough hatches and gravity / vacuum discharge gates from Miner. Both the HC71 & HC71A class cars were built with the classic PS clerestory roof line. In 1980, Roanoke cloned their own cars in Class HC78 (NW178501-179000), yet used a single slope corrugated roof design, which is similar to the roofs used on Evans 4780's. NW also inherited four lots of PS 4750's from the Illinois Terminal Classes HC85 (ITC1750-1799 / NW711750-711799), HC86 (ITC1800-1999 / NW711800-711999), HC87 (ITC 2000-2149 / NW712000-712149) and HC88 (ITC2150-2249 / NW712150-712249). These four lots were built between 1973 and 1976, and were built with four different discharge gates as well. It's highly unlikely that Tangent will produce the HC71's as they have a series of huck-rivets instead of standard bolts that Pullman used in construction, which would lead to needing another carbody.

To add to what Russ provided the classes HC69 & HC 70 were 4740 CF. Also the HC71's built in the Roanoke shops have two extra ribs on each side as compared to the standard PS 4750.
There is a lot of information on the NWHS website in the archives section that covers almost everything the N&W owned. From property, buildings, locomotives and freight cars, you can view low to medium resolution photos and can order almost everything for your personal use.

All of the PS designed and cloned 4750's all have 18 ribs, while the PS 4740's have 16. This holds true for the Richmond Tank Car and Trinity built 4750's.
