For fun I pulled out my old Atlas Dash 8-40CW sound locomotive this evening and gave it a run around the layout. It's one of the original QSI sound decoder models from 2006, and I found the lights (headlight & ditchlights) to be pretty inconsistent. I mean, sometimes they'd work and sometimes they wouldn't. The track and wheels are all clean, as the engine still runs very well. As I seem to recall there was some type up upgrade chip for the QSI decoders, but I don't know if it did anything to make the lighting more consistent or not. Is it worth trying to track this down or is it better to just replace the decoder all together?

Been awhile since I had my Atlas Dash 8 C's open for any work, so I don't remember if these have LED's or bulbs from 2006. I do know that the ditch lights have contact strips under the walkway which make for a bad connection at times. Think of the original Kato SD40-2 pick up contact. I ended up straight wiring mine and removing the contact strips. I do remember installing ESU in one and the other I might just be silent or still be QSI. I would look to track down a wiring problem first before replacing the sound board.

The Atlas wide cab Dash 8s have contact strips for the ditch lights that have, at best, very inconsistent contacts. The best solution is to solder wires in their place, just be careful when you take the shell off!

It sounds like I should take it apart and see if the contacts are will working. I know I haven't cracked this locomotive open in a long time, so maybe that's the issue.
