Athearn circa-2000 PS-5344 kit #5815 which includes drilled holes, separate wire grabs, modern underframe and a very clever brake gear piece. After the post from cemr5396 last week I was able to learn a few things about the prototype and it seems this model is very accurate. Athearn continues to release this model in RTR form today but they seem unaware that the incorrect font CP used on the prototype was correctly done on their original model kit. The prototype was repainted at D&H ONEONTA shops in 1995. The font Athearn uses on their RTR version of this model is correct for CP Rail generally, but not for this particular repaint. Nobody makes decals for this incorrect font either, so anyone who wants an accurate model of this particular prototype MUST use this kit or else make their own custom lettering.

Just a little more menial decal work today. Not an exact match to any car I can find, but replacing the Athearn numbers with some better stuff. I also removed the 224 stripes to at least make this a pre-2006ish iteration. It will look just fine on a layout someday.

These were pretty nice kits. Below is #5805 with Kadee "scale" couplers, RB trucks, and airhoses. I do believe that the model is about a scale foot too wide. Prototype

^Had a KCS one. Sold it because I thought it wouldn't fit, found out later I could have used it. Oh well... Maybe I'll find another one or exactrail will do them? Weathered this IC boxcar: Wondering where I could improve, probably could try oils at some point.

A few new pictures of old projects; SP 8512 from an un-numbered ST model. Besides the cab lettering, numbers, weathering, etc, I refined/added some of the details such as using A-Line windshield wipers, sump drain hose, and fixed the "floating" sanding hoses. I also repainted the inside of the cab, and painted the cooler, control stand, seats, etc. I also added a crew including a fireman who is reading the paper. SP SD40T-2 #8512 by Freight Engineer, on Flickr Next is a Tangent X58 weathered by my friend Michael Tierney. I love his weathering job. CR X58 368025 by Freight Engineer, on Flickr Last are two shots of B&O 163934, a class H48 made from modifying a recent run (2019) Bowser hopper. The biggest difference is scatchbuilding new ladders on the left hand side of the car to match what most Chessie hoppers had. New grabirons and brackets had to be made on the ends as well. I also replaced the brakewheel with a Kadee one, added etched brake platform, simulated brake rod and chain, moved some of the brake gear and created new brackets for the re-positioned air reservoir, plumbed the brake gear, added air hoses and cut levers, and installed .88 wheels. Then some weathering. For needing a fleet of these, the Bowser model is actually quite nice and usable. Two down, 300 more to go! Weathered this IC boxcar: [snip] Wondering where I could improve, probably could try oils at some point. That came out great! What did you use, the roof is super! Thanks for the compliment. As part of the whole car's weathering, I used a wash I made a while back of a raw sienna ink and 70% alcohol and used it everywhere. After doing the sides and sealing them with dullcote, I did a few paint washes with raw sienna on just the roof. Then went back with burnt umber with a foam brush with not a whole lot of paint (but not dry either), and dabbed it on. Then I went over the seam joints with tamiya dark brown panel line wash. Then more dullcote.

Both San Antonio based and almost in sight of each other. Pearl owned an electric railroad connection to the Cotton Belt which ran under wire into the 1980s.

As usual, some very fine modeling in this thread. Thanks to all for posting.
A question for danpik: I believe that on one of my two trips to Texas, one in the early 1980s in Austin, New Braunfels and the Texas Hill Country, the other around 1988 in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, I saw a Volkswagen decorated as an armadillo advertising Lone Star beer. I haven't been able to find a photo or other documentation of that. Do you have any? Unfortunately, the TexMex and New Orleans style Border Cafe near Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA has closed permanently. I liked to eat there before proceeding to Red Sox games in Boston's Fenway Park.

Sounds like a neat modeling project if pictures could be found. Dan
