I'm going to preorder a bunch of the Finger Lakes cars, those sell pretty fast around here. Not much I see I need for my own layout, maybe a few of the plug door boxcars.

I’ve got no skin in the game, but those Metra cars and MP36s are sure to be a big hit!

Those Metra bi-levels look pretty sharp. They could ease my pangs a bit for the missing PLATED Budd bi-levels. I'd rather have a different locomotive, though. Maybe something F40'ish.

Good news for Metra Fans: Cars:
Check out the summer 2022 catalog: Metra Cars Are these based on the old True Line Trains MP36 models? If so, that is sad to hear based on their horrendous trucks and glitchy operating behavior. The cars, however, look great.

The cars, however, look great. I'm assuming they are. Atlas bought True Line years ago, but this is the first time seeing the MP36 being rerun. I wonder if Atlas made any changes to it; the ESu decoder is probably new, so hopefully some electrical issues have been fixed.

Good to see a new run of MP36s. It'd be nice to get another Northstar MP36, which is not being offered, to help my existing True Line MP36 pull the Rapido Northstar bilevels, which are also not being offered.

The cars, however, look great. I would hope they tool a new mechanism. That was one engine I had to return because it just didn't work right.Seemed Tycoish to me. Either way I'm looking at quite a hefty purchase between the three engines and coaches and cabs.

The issues with the old ones were the bad motherboards and horrible wiring from the factory. Mine had multiple solder bridges that fried the the first decoder. A friend had one that had to have the motherboard replaced. The wiring in Atlas models is much better and I assume they will make new motherboards, so I am not worried about these.

Great news! I'm going to take a wild guess that there's going to be quite a few TLT MP36/40's getting posted to eBay.
I would have bet money Walthers would have eventually came around and announce plated Nippon Sharyo passenger cars in HO. But lately Walthers seems to be all in on their Mainline product line and reruns of their yearly "Name Trains".
Atlas must have been pleased with the sales of their NJ Transit modern commuter car project, that they decided to do more commuter cars. Their 2nd release of NJ Transit double deck commuter cars that also included MBTA are near impossible to find, so I hope another run is coming since I missed out.
These will definitely sell out and I'm in for a METRA MP36 and matching passenger car set even though I don't model METRA, just to support the project. If the project does well, I hope Atlas can get the licensing to do Virginia Railway Express MP36's with matching Nippon Sharyo passenger cars.

I love commuter trains and want to support them too. I just wish they at least fit in my ‘90s modeling era. If they do the VRE version, I’ll go in for a few since I’ve at least lived in that area. Hopefully they designed them so they can adjust the tooling for prototype variations. Dave

Hopefully they designed them so they can adjust the tooling for prototype variations. Dave I was disappointed when Rapido cancelled the VRE F40PH due to lack of orders. If Atlas had made this announcement of Nippon Sharyo passenger cars a year ago, even though this first production run is METRA only, I suspect the orders for the Rapido VRE F40PH would have increased, just based on future speculation of possible matching passenger cars.
I do have to wonder, why the sudden interest in modern commuter trains? For years (decades), we, whined, complained, threw hissy fits on forum boards to get ANY modern commuter train made that didn't require serious modifications to run properly (Walthers Comet Cars!!) and NOW, at least for me, I have to consider a second mortgage because there's so much product currently available or in production! Atlas, Rapido and now Athearn & Bachmann (Siemens Venture cars) have really stepped up to the plate.
Now, I'm just patiently waiting for Viewliner Sleepers and another run of plated Superliners. And if someone announces anything for MARC, I am done!!!

You can thank MARC for nothing being available. It's all on them not allowing it.
The cars and MP36 lend themselves to a VRE and CalTrain run next?...

I see that the prototype cars have shiny stainless sides: And I also see that Atlas doesn't use words like "plated" or "metal" in their description. My enthusiasm is diminishing for cars that look like they're going to be spray painted aluminum. Ah, well. I s'pose I should really get some more freight cars. Ed

That explains why Atlas was so quiet about the MP36 tooling.
It's nice to see someone finally taking the plunge on bilevels, even though they don't fit my era. They are probably the best variant to do right now, since they run for 3 different operators as noted above. Still hopeful for a good Budd version.

Except for the window arrangement, these look pretty close to the Caltrain NS cars. If so, I hope Atlas designed the tooling to accommodate alternate sides. Caltrain has had two “paint schemes” on their Nippon Sharyo cars.

I'm just amused at the irony how 40 years ago chrome plated trains were dismissed as toys and now guys want them plated. If the guys at Tyco could do it....

Since they are doing Metra, why don’t anyone do a Winnebago?

Since they are doing Metra, why don’t anyone do a Winnebago? Now that would be something to see. They have definitely grown on me over the years. At first, I thought they were just a weird corrupted version of the F40PH, but now I like them for their unique character. The PHMs are special, since they were the last locomotives built at LaGrange. I imagine seeing the last one roll out of the shop would have been an emotional moment. I think one of the reasons for their absence in the hobby is their relative obscurity. Being applicable to only one railroad, and only a few lines of the Metra system at that, they don't have the greatest appeal. The lack of good Metra cars has definitely hurt them too. I have seen some 3D printed cabs though, and a few good Kato and Walthers conversions, but a brand-new from-the-ground-up shell would be nice too. If a manufacturer did end up attempting a Metra PHM, it would open the door for Amtrak F69PHACs as well, since the two are very similar. While we are at it, why not make F40Cs too?

Come to think of it Bachmann had some chrome Metroliners or Amfleet cars way back when.
If you want them to reflect like polished stainless, they will need some type of plating done. I was being a little tongue in cheek with the Tyco stuff, but the same process would apply, just toned to look more like stainless than outright chrome.

I've been working on a couple of Walthers plated cars. I wanted to strip the striping and lettering, so the clearcoat they used to "tone down" the chrome had to go. I've decided to keep the as-is chrome. I feel that it looks more like the prototype than the way the cars came. NOT that they looked bad. I just had to make a decision, and I decided not to clearcoat them again. There was no pigment, only a clear flat coat.
Also, I'm not sure whether I could do an appropriate clearcoat. And if I didn't, I'd have to strip the car back down and do it again.
So mine will run shiny.

For the Metra MP36s I'm a little concerned that they don't show a front view. The Metra locos have a extra signal light in the nose that the other operators don't.
