I have been a HO modeler since getting in to model trains and have amassed a nice collection. Recently I have been looking at Proto:48 and just picked up a few freight cars. I like the size and heft of Proto:48 when compared to HO. I know types of freight cars and detail parts are somewhat slim pickings with O compared to HO. For what I want to model - roughly 15-20 freight cars, 2-3 engines, and a couple passenger cars would be all that is required. Has anyone taken the leap to switching scales and can offer advice on the process or pitfalls? Part of me wants to hold on to my HO stuff in case I change my mind, but selling it would free the capital to quickly amass what I need.

I think it depends on how emotionally attached you are to the HO stuff.
If it has some personal meaning, I'd keep it: you built it, a friend gave it to you, you REALLY wanted it......
If it's just "stuff", might as well dump it. If you want to get back into HO later, there'll be even better stuff.
I do suggest that you play with the O scale long enough to KNOW you're committed, before selling. Which theory of course doesn't do much for using the profits from the sale of the HO to pay for some of the O.
O scale is, indeed, most cool. I remember seeing an O scale North Coast Limited running on a layout. Oh, my!

I too have been tempted by the Proto 48 thing as well. I really liked the idea of being able to get much more in depth with the track details. Plus dead rail seems like a more plausible option in O scale. But I never got past the consideration of the investment I already have in HO. And I don't mean financially. I'm still gainfully employed and plan to be for quite a while. I'm talking about time. I have an enormous amount of time invested into HO modeling and I can't get that back at any price. I get very little hobby time as it, I don't think I could start over at this point. But it ultimately comes down to what will bring you the most enjoyment.
