$650 for a set of 3 Amtrak California cars with sound. Wow. $150 each for non-sound cars. Nowdays here in coastal California Car country*, that's an average dinner bill for two.
* Home of $6.50+ gas.
I grew up in California but I wouldn't be able to afford to move back there. I took my mom and wife out for Mexican here in northern Virginia and the total price for the 3 of us on Fathers day was $58 including tip. My wife just got gas this morning for $4.76.

The problem with buying multi-packs of cars is that the first rule of hobby spending is never add up how much things cost.

Half the reason I got into the selling side of the hobby was to pay for the buying side of it. Once in a while that even works out.

This one seemed like a pretty big announcement; there are a lot of freight cars this month. Maybe the duplicate announcements like two California cars made it seem bigger than it was, but the variety is pretty good this month. The Surfliner and California car aren't really for my locale, but I'm sure they will be popular models. With all the commuter and passenger locomotives like Chargers and F59PHIs, its nice that manufacturers are getting around to the cars they pull. Surfliner, California car, Rapido Horizon, Atlas Gallery Car, it seems like the last year or two has seen major passenger car announcements. What major types of cars still need to be produced? Maybe more Amfleets? Walthers hasn't done a run of those in a while. Most of the popular models have already been released several times over. Now it’s time for manufacturers to move into those railroad-specific, era-specific, locale-specific areas to try and capture the rest of the market, just like they mentioned, with the funding from subsequent releases of their current offerings. It’s fine by me! I’m loving the passenger stuff!
PS - I sure hope Atlas finds a way to successfully plate the Nippon Gallery cars, otherwise it’s in the “dunk tank”, followed by Alclad II! Athearn (Santa Fe and WP f-units) and Broadway Limited (California Zephyr) really changed the game with metallic finishes on plastic!
Donnell^^^This! *Nothing* has ever looked as good as the BLI Zephyr cars as far as stainless steel cars. I expect when I finally get the long-awaited Budd bilevels that I will have to Alclad them because no one has done as nice since then. Even the Amfleet and other plated Walthers cars have fallen short. Now, if Walthers wanted to sell some stuff off existing tooling, there's plenty of individual cars that could be run using the name train tooling, but they have zero imagination. Coaches, baggage, sleepers, etc...lots of prototypes on their second or third life from the GN and ATSF name trains.

Athearn has done at least two runs of the WM 2970s in as-delivered paint but the lettering/font is too thick. I'd love to see this corrected but after two runs, I have my doubts. The prototypes also had Wabcopac truck mounted brakes so to be accurate, you need to remove the offending parts inside the B end cage. Luckily Tangent not only makes wonderful S2 100 ton trucks but they also sell a truck mounted brake hanger part to convert their trucks to truck-mounted brakes. So, I'm guessing the same configuration and truck type must have been used on the EL cars too. I don't have a clear photo of the "B" end, but the Athearn model does not have the brake cylinder included. I'll gladly replace the trucks on any car with Tangent ones, they're some of the best available! Thanks, Mark Reading, PA

I agree with you about Tangent trucks, all metal wheels and axle!
When I buy a car from them I also get a few trucks.
And when I order from Lombard hobby, I took all they had.

Looks like the highcube boxcars are the old MDC double door that were hard to match up to real boxcars, maybe close to one or two at most.

Moloco is making correct models of the Santa Fe 50' hi cube exterior post boxcars that are "closest" to that Athearn former MDC car, which appears to have very clearly been modeled from a Santa Fe prototype class. Santa Fe did in fact build several of their own unique boxcar classes. That is why nobody else had anything quite the same and folks cannot find a match that isn't a Santa Fe car. For example the Santa Fe mechanical reefers are different from PFE (Intermountain's model) with what appears to be more than just merely different truck spacing--the stated car lengths are actually different according to the one Shock Control era boxcars book (spiral bound, available from the hysterical society). Cars that I always thought were 57' are actually not.
I have 4 Molocos pre-ordered, 2 each of 2 different Santa Fe classes.

I like the brake sounds and door chime sounds. Definitely opens up the door for more commuter modeler sounds here in nj/ny area.

Athearn updated the lettering on the third run of their CSX ACF 2970 paint scheme to make it more accurate, based on input from a couple knowledgeable CSX modelers, so there’s hope. They just announced their fourth run of that scheme. The first CSX run looked pretty good. The tan they used on the second run looked really odd, so I sold mind. I was glad to see the lettering improved on the third run. Dave
