Yes, really! It's freakin' AWESOME in both looks and performance! I'm a Santa Fe guy, so I prefer my Genesis SD45-2 units, but my son has the newest UP 6936, and it's just the coolest monster on the layout and with its weight and two motors does pull as well as or better than two of the SD45-2 units (which themselves have a redesigned and heavier diecast frame). I might even be forced to pickup a second DDA40X just because they are so freakin' awesome! John

Is the PS 5277 too wide, or was that just the PS 5344?

John not denying it's a great model but it would have been nice to see something new, or a second run of something else rather than another run of DD40s when the last one was just delivered a couple months ago. I have been waiting for another run of SD70ACUs so they can make more of the CP Heritage units, but there have now been two runs of DD40s announced since the initial SD70ACU announcement and all we can get out of them regarding another run is 'some time this year'.

(obscure 80's TV reference) I thought BOTH models are fat. Isn't that the former MDC PS 5277, complete with too fat corner post and short spacing from corner post to end rib? It definitely does not meet correct rib size/spacing. The Intermountain PS 5277, when you can find it, is a much better looking version. John

I provided a scan of the B&O 628038 Athearn is doing in this run of 2893s. I haven't been able to find the link to the artwork for that specific car, as Athearn mentions each variation will be available on social media. The prototype car had standard ribs at each end of the car versus the channel side ribs on the .pdf of the C&O car.
Note that the C&O cars were Chessie HC10 class and were home-built (Raceland) 2940 cuft cars, while the B&O cars were HC9s and were true PS 2893s.

Of the UP CA-10's, two have the U-1 yellow dot, and two do not.
UP 25707 was built July 1975. UP 25724 and UP 25729 were built in August of 1975. UP 25747 was built in September of 1975.
They did not have the dots when built. They were added starting in 1978, through maybe 1981, when the project was completed (white dots = BAD). It appears not every UP caboose got the dots.
So. Before 1978, not dots. After? Maayyyyyybeeeee....

This one seemed like a pretty big announcement; there are a lot of freight cars this month. Maybe the duplicate announcements like two California cars made it seem bigger than it was, but the variety is pretty good this month.
The Surfliner and California car aren't really for my locale, but I'm sure they will be popular models. With all the commuter and passenger locomotives like Chargers and F59PHIs, its nice that manufacturers are getting around to the cars they pull. Surfliner, California car, Rapido Horizon, Atlas Gallery Car, it seems like the last year or two has seen major passenger car announcements. What major types of cars still need to be produced? Maybe more Amfleets? Walthers hasn't done a run of those in a while.

Now it’s time for manufacturers to move into those railroad-specific, era-specific, locale-specific areas to try and capture the rest of the market, just like they mentioned, with the funding from subsequent releases of their current offerings. It’s fine by me! I’m loving the passenger stuff!
PS - I sure hope Atlas finds a way to successfully plate the Nippon Gallery cars, otherwise it’s in the “dunk tank”, followed by Alclad II! Athearn (Santa Fe and WP f-units) and Broadway Limited (California Zephyr) really changed the game with metallic finishes on plastic!

Did Athearn ever offer the ACF 2970 in WM original paint (not patched or stenciled for COTS)? It was a very small class of cars for the WM, only 50, but it would be nice to have one. Athearn did a nice job on these cars. The only thing I would like to see upgraded is the coupler box. Thanks, Mark J. Reading, PA

New viewliners, VIA's Renaissance, Alaska based items (ARR and cruise lines, ultra domes, etc.), HEP accurate VIA stock, and so on.

Athearn has done at least two runs of the WM 2970s in as-delivered paint but the lettering/font is too thick. I'd love to see this corrected but after two runs, I have my doubts. The prototypes also had Wabcopac truck mounted brakes so to be accurate, you need to remove the offending parts inside the B end cage. Luckily Tangent not only makes wonderful S2 100 ton trucks but they also sell a truck mounted brake hanger part to convert their trucks to truck-mounted brakes.
