It's been a while since I have had time to sit at the work bench and start, much less finish anything. I bought a couple of the latest run of Athearn Genesis 2.0 SD70M-2's from my preferred pusher and was for the most part pleased with how they turned out, except for the road numbers. I know it was mentioned both here and on some other boards that Athearn has had some issues with various items throughout this run of SD70M-2's. For NS, both the cab road numbers and the rear hood numbers are off from what they should be. I removed the offending numbers with a cotton bud & 91% Iso. I then masked the windows and shot a quick coat of Tamiya clear semi-gloss, which matches the existing finish across the whole model. I used replacement numbers from an old set ShellScale #HO152 - EMD Factory Painted Locos. Since I had also removed both the NS sub-lettering and the locomotive type, I replaced them with decals from ShellScale Set #HO140 - NS Diesel Data and set #HO135 - NS Locomotive Designations. I printed off a 2012 image of NS #2681 that Mike Rujak posted on Locophotos which is a top 3/4 shot for the basis of my weathering. The chipping was done with a color called Buff, which is an "Oilbrusher" from Ammo and a 5/0 brush. The weathering on the side frames and fuel tank is a combination of oils, washes & pigments from Ammo, Tamiya and Vallejo. There are two last things to do, one is to repaint the PTC platform from black to grey and they to spray a light coat of grime to blend the trucks & fuel tank together. I may add some more soot to the engine hood as well. Hope everyone has a great Sunday! Russ flic.kr/p/2nxiz27flic.kr/p/2nxm1Tkflic.kr/p/2nxm1W6flic.kr/p/2nxjQtU

Looks great Russ! I like your weathering
I'm happy with mine, haven't had time to replace the numbers yet.

Having been doing the same artwork mod myself lately (CSX MP15AC and GTW GP40-2) I can appreciate the small but monumental step towards the prototype. Your chipping effects look terrific, it's still hard to believe how long those units have been off the roster.

I posted this a few places to advertise my new decal venture last week, and it still needs to go through the weathering treatment before the roof walk can be applied. Then it will be "done", but as it sits, the lettering is completed and therefore worth sharing. The rattle can clear was not as big a success as I'd have hoped. The prototype, courtesy of Doug Stark: Check out the website to give your Rapido 3800's a little more realism! www.chicagolinkdecals.com

The rattle can clear was not as big a success as I'd have hoped. It varies between brands. But it helps to get the can on temperature. Just put the can in some hot tap water, wait a couple of minutes, shake the hell out of it and put it two minutes back in the hot water. A quick shake and of you go. This makes a world of difference in the result.

Finally got some projects off the workbench. First up are two N&W C32P cabs, one Atlas and one OMI, your guess. The Atlas was rebuilt with an Exactrail diagonal panel roof and had the cupola rebuilt from scratch. Windows patched and enlarged as needed. Also got a Fr8kar propane tank. Next is a Intermountain 4750 painted for Warrenton RR here in NC. Only picture I have found is in the Morning Sun Shortlines of NS Vol. 2. Mix and match decals. Painted first with Testors Bright blue then Tru-Color B&M blue. Last is a scratch built NS GP59 which is finally finished. Built on a P2K frame and walkway with scratch built hood and lots of Cannon parts. Not quite happy with the handrails but after three years I can count it done. Cab and dynamic brake are 3D printed parts from our own Fr8kar here. Thanks for looking. Lots of great work shown today!

Thanks, Ryan. I'm pretty happy with them, I ran an improved logo (the one you see here) along with some different spacing on a few things to add to the original sheet.
Gino, I tried to get the can warm but didnt probably do it enough. I also may have fanned the model too quickly as I was worried about soaking it.

That's really great to see you tackling the correct lettering for those cars. I like the Rapido model but was disappointed that a Canadian company didn't produce more accurate Canadian lettering (PWRS made the same error, if I recall correctly). I wanted one example of a CP Rail car like that, since I saw them show up occasionally in Maryland. I'm not sure what brand you're using, but Tamiya's cans (both clear coat and primer) produce an incredibly fine and even spray, nearly as good as airbrushing. A number of "pro" modelers that I've seen use them because of the convenience (time) and easier cleanup. Dave

And you being another CSX modeler can understand the importance of these cars. In the future if I ever get in gear with the layout they will head East on the BOCT and also down the C&EI/L&N joint trackage for the bone valley via Nashville. I'll have to try Tamiya next, I've been trying my luck with the Krylon stuff and am nowhere near close to being "out" but that doesn't help me if I'm not getting satisfactory results now does it.

Is the top car a cannon and co kit? It's a Fox River car IIRC, not sure if it's all that accurate for GN - saw it someplace and bought it.
