OK decalling is finally done but I ran out of good painting season outside. Basement paint booth to the rescue for the final spray of dullcote!

All painting, lettering and clear coatings are done. I then moved everything from the various painting handles to this board for the photo. Whew again!

Now that I have decided exactly which versions of CP's streamlined vans to build, I needed to bring back two of the underframes for additional detailing. CP 437442 had a large propane tank installed in 1978 and these are the parts I'll be using to scratch the unusual fuel source.

Are the Multimarks on the two vans at left slightly larger (longer) than the others at right? The ones at left seem to extend closer to the side windows and maybe have a thicker white section? Just wondering if this was an intentional change to match the prototype, an optical illusion, or just small differences between decal sets? (or maybe the windows are in slightly different locations?) Regardless, awesome progress!

Just wondering if this was an intentional change to match the prototype, an optical illusion, or just small differences between decal sets? (or maybe the windows are in slightly different locations?) Regardless, awesome progress! You are very observant! Indeed, the decals are not all exactly the same because I had to use several different sets to complete all five vans. There were slight differences in the multimark decals I was trying to use without breaking the bank. Window placement does not vary on these. As for the prototype, I have not studied them closely enough to have noticed sizing changes in the multimarks. It is worth mentioning again that CP 437442 received no less than three action yellow repaints between 1973 and '84; did the multimarks differ slightly on each as with other things like diesels etc? I don't know.
I would also mention the 1954 center cupola cabooses did have some variations in multimarks as an effort to compensate for different window placement on those. The Highball decal set includes the correct multimark for those variations, but alas they are not correct for the streamlined vans so I couldn't use those.
Thank you for interest in my build and for posing a question!

Do I remember right that all but two of these cars were rebuilt into extended vision cars? I guess that was in the Action Yellow era?

Do I remember right that all but two of these cars were rebuilt into extended vision cars? I guess that was in the Action Yellow era? Hi there, that is exactly right. There were 51 wide visions made in 1968-69, 45 of which were ex-streamlined and the remainder came from center cupola ranks. The rebuilds you mention were the original CP wide visions and the first CP cabooses to display action yellow in those early years.

Styrene tube was cut for the main tank body and glued to end/mount pieces, then hand painted and weathered. I didn't have many prototype reference photos so this was a best effort. The access covers below were scratched with more bits from the scrap box.

Last build shot of the tanks. These are the underframes for the 1978 and 1984 versions of 437442.

Chop up some nice thick styrene strips for stronger side wall glue mounting. Attach these to underframes using glue that won't fog.

Test fitting of the side walls revealed some sections of white styrene were showing through the windows. Solve that with a rough application of interior green.

Cut and glue short side wall corner strips. Sized to clear the side wall strips glued to the underframes, some test fitting is needed before measuring and gluing.

Quick shot of the interior walls, Christian FYI. I decided to leave the grey primer as the colour of choice as it is very dark in here. At the bottom are my crude black hand paint jobs. Reason for those is because a narrow portion of the inside, side walls will be visible after everything is put together. I want to show a nice consistent black when the vans are turned over. Much easier to crudely paint this black now rather than doing it after assembly.

Once again, a lot of careful thought, tools, jigs and planning were needed to achieve a nice square assembly. Here the ends are glued to the sidewalls and held in place with clamps and various other jig bits. Use slow-set glue like Weldbond so you have time to tweak everything; ACC not recommended here. Let all this dry overnight.

While the side walls are drying, the time can be used to hand paint the cupola interiors. Again allow to dry.

Finished side + end assembly. Note side walls hang lower than end walls. Add .040 styrene shim in your glue jig setup to allow for that.

Thanks for the two nice comments above, greatly appreciated!
Whew, after several days of jig mounting, dry time and removal, all sections are now complete and ready for mounting to underframes!

One gluing fixture? How many per day? And those other two cabooses were being built at the same time?

One gluing fixture? How many per day? And those other two cabooses were being built at the same time? Hi Christian, one gluing fixture for the streamlined vans and one for the woodies. I was able to glue two streamliners and one wood van per day. A lot of time elapsed between the last handful of posted photos as you need to be in the right mood for this type of work.
