This is different. What happened to the requests for an Amtrak SDP40F? Everytime Athearn says new locomotive it's right at the top. This time no mention.
Nothing has changed - I've certainly seen many mentions of a wish for the SDP40F on other forums like Train Orders.

What this country needs is a good HO Pressure Differential hopper. I'd prefer one of the NYC Flexi-Flo versions (the Penn Central version is being done), but I'd settle for a more recent PD hopper design as well. I do have a few of the ones Walthers did maybe 15 years ago.
I'll take a new truck tractor, like a Freightliner FLD 120, which is still being used today pulling containers on chassis. Covers the 1990's, 2000's, up until today.
I would also take a new 53' trailer featuring a new UPS prototype. I know Athearn still has the licensing, and it would sell.
Yes Ferro Kid is right: A new pressure differential hopper is needed that would cover the 1990's-today.

Vito I wish Athearn would do a new vehicle. Their Mack R's and B's, and the Ford C's & F's are beautiful. With all of the modern Die cast around from Trucks and Stuff etc, it might just be a wish. Any non Grain Covered Hopper from the 1970's on would be great. Particularly modern Pressure Differential cars, either in the 3000 CF range, or their larger 5,000 plus CF brothers. A modern 3,300 or so CF car from Thrall, Trinity, NSC, Gunderson would be nice. We are in good shape on the grain front, with all of the cars out there including Intermountain, Athearn, and Tangents offerings. Except for the one railroad only Big John. 1970's to modern gondola's would be nice too. Bill
According to the Athearn Facebook, the new model is not a locomotive:
Amtrak California & Surfliner cars for those ton of Amtrak F59PHI's on the market with no passenger cars?
Dear Santa, this year for Christmas I want...
Its certainly a niche that's in demand, but I don't see Athearn (who has been pretty much using the same passenger tooling for years upon years) of all the manufacturers to develop a bi-level intercity car that is only used on two lines in California (both under an Amtrak name, which would require them to get a license from Amtrak).
The only manufacturer I potentially see making them would be Walthers, cause they already have the Superliner tooling. Even then, it would take some serious modifcation of the tooling to produce the Surfliner cars that would cost Walthers a pretty penny. For that reason, I don't think we're going to see Surfliner cars, ever.
Now if you excuse me... I'm going to take my lonely F59PHI out to the bar and buy it a few rounds, maybe try to hook him up with some of those shiny, pretty Walthers Superliners painted in the Surfliner scheme to get his head off of the lack of proper Surfliners.

I too have my Amtrak F59 staring at me, wishing for something legit to pull. At this point I don't think Santa can help with getting Amtrak California Cars in plastic.
But think of it this way, Amtrak cab cars & Horizon cars are certain to be coming down the pike from Walthers, and with Rapido, you never know what surprises might pop up from them.
Now I'm signing off the forum now to go put my lonely Amtrak F59PHI on tracks and pull some coal porters or something.....

Oh I would love some horizon cars, but once again I am skeptical... Who knows, maybe WALTHERS will surprise us at the convention. I would also love some viewliners, but seeing that we haven't even had a picture from Amtrak of the prototype viewliner diner or the baggage dorm we probably won't be getting the viewliners for a few years either.

Also posted early is a Ready-To-Roll Norfolk Southern SD40-2 with a special NMRA logo, presumably applying to it to mark the national convention in Cleveland.
